Juliet Marillier is a masterful storyteller. I admit to being just a tad off-put by this second volume picking up five years past some events of importance that were unresolved at the end of _The Dark Mirror_, but as the story unfolded and her gift for characterization once again took hold of me, I quickly forgot my quibble. So, other than that, and the sense I had on two occasions of important scenes not being explored as fully as they might, I still come out being very satisfied with this book, and looking forward to the next one if such is in store.
