Dripping with cliches and purple prose, this is one of those convoluted fantasy novels that wishes it was Game of Thrones for teens, but just isn't. On paper it seems like the perfect comparison: it has a ridiculously gigantic cast of characters, the squicky incest and temptresses, and the buckets of blood and killing of major characters, and a little bit of magic in a game of medieval politics. But it lacks heart. It feels limp and old. I get why some people probably would devour this thing, especially its sequels, but it was a slog of angsty nonsense with cardboard characters cobbled out of the Fantasy Novel Scraps box. Disappointing.
