Physicist Ian Donnelly says to linguist Louise Banks "You approach language like mathematics." I have watched this film several times and I am still fascinated with the beauty of time and thought and language. Arrival addresses communication on both a visceral and an intellectual level. How we learn and how we teach are critical in our perception of the world and the way we communicate what we know. Arrival presents a view of this by contrasting how different people and different countries choose to communicate with the fascinating Heptapods. Louise immerses herself in the language and follows the knowledge that language gives her. The ending provides both action and reflection. I will be watching it again. (I bought a copy so I can as often as I want.)
