The Bread Winner” by Deborah Ellis is a great coming of age story about a young teenage girl and her struggles living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. This story is very easy to connect to for teens since the story is through the eyes of a teenage girl even though lots of people reading it have never been in a war. It also teaches lots of us the reality of war and persecution some people endure that they do not deserve. Since girls do not have any rights under Taliban rule, Parvanna has to cut her to look like a boy so she can work. This is because her dad has been arrested and sent to prison so therefore he cannot make income for the family. As time progresses, she finds an school friend that also cut her hair to look like a boy so she can work to. They end up finding job digging up bones in a cemetery and selling them for income. She eventually earns enough money so she can go and find her dad. She eventually does and bails him out of jail. The story then leads into the sequel of the book. The horrifying situations and events that happen really put the effects of war and persecution into reality for us in Canada when reading the book. A great book if your interested in human rights and world issues. 9.5/10 @Sportsreader03 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library I personally love this book because it gives the reader an insight into the life of a girl in Afghanistan during the taliban in power. This is a very quick read and I finished it in a day but it is a very emotional and powerful book. The writing style is very simple and I really like this because it allows the reader to focus on the concept and even young reader can read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about different cultures and quick reads. I highly recommend this book to anyone because it really opens your eyes and shows you other people’s lives. 5 Stars. @bookreader14 of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board The book “The Breadwinner” is a well-written novel with suspenseful events and cliffhangers after every chapter. “The Breadwinner” initially has a series of 3 books with the same theme throughout each one. This book really expresses the mood and emotion of anger, suspense and sadness. The text is very well written, giving little images and senses of dangerous and heartbreaking events throughout the whole novel. I personally believe that this novel is based on teens, as the book tells a story of a young girl’s struggles living in Afghanistan. However, I do not recommend this book for younger children due to the fact that it could difficult for them to understand the plot and could perhaps be boring. Once you start reading Breadwinner you cannot stop until you have finished the whole book and perhaps the whole series. This book can easily catch the attention of people who simply do not enjoy reading, this book will definitely attract them into the Breadwinner series and perhaps into the world of reading. “The Breadwinner” is easily a great book to read over the summer when you have nothing to do.
