The 'plot', such as it is, wanders from broad comedy to melodrama to just plain silly. There are a few nice touches, such as the musical conjuring up of dueling hombres in spaghetti westerns, but the dialogue is never sharp enough for the film's comedic intent and the editing left it way too long. Judy Davis is outstanding as the heroine's wise-cracking mother, and of course no one is going to get tired of looking at Kate Winslet. But overall the film falls flat and does not even pass muster as a harmless way to spend an evening.
