As a 'adventure' novel, EXIT STRATEGY is a good read. I generally like Steve Hamilton - but I am turned off by the Nick Mason series after two books. Nothing is wrong with the writing per se. But, the core story of Nick as a capable operative who is being blackmailed to kill people (albeit bad guys in their own right) and who can't escape the trap he is in, is just is too deeply mired in a circular path of harsh violence. To his credit, Hamilton has created a character to who has a moral compass - for example, someone trying to keep his daughter and ex-wife alive and who works hard at avoiding collateral damage during his assassinations. But, I have trouble seeing how this capable character will ever escape that vicious cycle - especially since this book, by its title, was set up for him to make such an escape, only in the end to find out his controller was actually being controlled by someone else, who Mason is now beholden to. No more from this series for me.
