In 1938 Vienna, Elise's Jewish family works on getting visas to escape. The rest have major talents that help them, but Elise doesn't. In the end, she must go to England as a domestic servant. She goes to Tyneford, an isolated mansion on the coast, where she meets the master, Christopher, inadvertently, and gets off on the wrong foot. When his son Kit arrives home, they become friends. Because of war shortages, Elise--soon renamed Alice by Christopher--fills many roles around the estate not in her job description. It took a while to get into this, but I ended up enjoying it, no matter how predictable. The descriptions of the manor and the estate really drew me in, and I could see why Elise wanted to stay.
