Basketball. The court, the ball, the hoop. The hopes, the dreams, the sweat. It takes dedication and discipline to be the best, and the Shohoku High hoops team wants to be just that--the best. They have one last year to make their captain's dream of reaching the finals come true--will they do it? Takehiko Inoue's legendary basketball manga is finally here, and the tale of a lifetime is in your hands!

Sakuragi Hanamichi's got no game with girls--none at all! It doesn't help that he's known for throwing down at a moment's notice and always coming out on top. A hopeless bruiser, he's been rejected by 50 girls in a row! All that changes when he meets the girl of his dreams, Haruko, and she's actually not afraid of him! When she introduces him to the game of basketball, his life is changed forever...

The facial expressions of heartbreak -- combined with friendly bystanders egging on our protagonist -- is some of the most fun I've had with a YA book. Comically outrageous, densely compact and expertly crafted visuals, that explore abstraction and action, this manga is goofy fun that lives up to its status as one of manga's premium series. Onto volume 2!

My favorite part in Slam Dunk was when Sakuragi embarrassed Haruko's brother by taking his pencil!

RE: The first comment --- This is only the first volume of Slam Dunk. Although author Inoue Takehiko has written more serious work (namely REAL, another basketball series, and Vagabond) Slam Dunk is and always will be a 'feel good' 90s sports comedy.

That being said, the story will develop into greatly rendered volumes of sportsmanship and the spirit of teamwork. Sakuragi developes hugely from what he is in Vol. 1. Takehiko writes some great games that any basketball fan will appreciate. Give the series or the anime a chance, this will always be one of the best in the sports anime/manga genre.
