While certainly nowhere near as good or as influential as the original, this sequel is not as bad as its reputation suggests. It tries for the same blend of clever satire and ultraviolence as the first, but is not as successful. That said, it's entertaining, has some cool effects, and a few interesting ideas. Paul Weller returns as the title character, Nancy Allen returns as his partner, and Tom Noonan as the bad guy, but really corporate goons are the enemy. The use of a psychotic kid as a killer is gimmicky and dumb. Irvin Kershner, who directed "The Empire Strikes Back," is behind the camera and astute fans will notice references to Luke's hand being lost, Darth Vader taking off his helmet, and C3-PO being taken apart. Frank Miller ("The Dark Knight Returns," "300") worked on the script, which apparently went through many changes. Followed by a third film and a remake/reboot.
