Ichigo Kurosaki never asked for the ability to see ghosts - he was born with the gift. When his family is attacked by a Hollow, a malevolent lost soul, Ichigo becomes a Soul Reaper, dedicating his life to protecting the innocent and helping the tortured spirits themselves find peace. Find out why Tite Kubo's Bleach has become an international manga smash-hit!

The race to save Rukia from the Soul Society is officially on, and Ichigo and company have come to their first roadblock, a very, very big roadblock. Jindanbô, the monstrous, fez-sporting gatekeeper hasn't let a single soul enter the Western Gate he guards in over 300 years, and he isn't about to change his mind about it just because Ichigo's crew wants to go through either. But, in a where-the-rubber-meets-the-road kind of way, Ichigo wasn't expecting his assault on the Soul Society to be a piece of cake either. After all, that'd just be boring.

In this volume, Ichigo and the others are practicing how to make cannonballs using their own spirit energy. Everyone except for Ichigo can easily make one. Ichigo has to stay longer to perfect the cannonball. Ganju gives Ichigo a tip on how to make the cannonball. With this advice, Ichigo almost destroys Kukaku’s house and Yoruichi has to tell him how to actually make the cannonball. After this, Ichigo and the group with Ganju are launched into the the Sereitei but are separated once they hit a barrier. Ichigo and Ganju end up together, Orihime and Uryu are together, Chad and Yoruichi are alone. Ichigo and Ganju find to soul reapers from the eleventh squad, a third seat and fifth seat. They are challenged to a fight and accept. Ichigo wins against the third seat, Ikkaku Madarame, and Ganju is being cornered by the fifth seat, Yumichika Ayasegawa. 4/5. @GOATreviews of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

The gang is launched (literally) into the Soul Society HQ in their quest to free Rukia. Split up upon landing, each pair runs into soul reapers that they must either evade or defeat.

Great instalment in the series, full of fights and ridiculously funny action sequences. This manga manages to strike the right balance of the intense brooding that makes the genre so appealing, and the zany "wahhhh" that is also implicit.

Good stuff.
