Genocide is a 1982 83-minute documentary directed by Arnold Schwartzman concerning the Holocaust. Narrated by Elizabeth Taylor and Orson Welles, the film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The Holocaust was the mass murder or genocide of approximately six million Jews during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, throughout the German Reich and German-occupied territories. Of the nine million Jews who had resided in Europe before the Holocaust, approximately two-thirds were killed. Over one million Jewish children were killed in the Holocaust, as were approximately two million Jewish women and three million Jewish men. A network of over 40,000 facilities in Germany and German-occupied territory were used to concentrate, hold, and kill Jews and other victims. Most heart-wrenching scenes are the Jewish women who get undressed before the German soldiers and who are led into the ravine which is about 150 meters long and 30 meters wide and a good 15 meters deep. When they reach the bottom of the ravine they are forced to lie down on top of Jews who have already been shot. The corpses are literally in layers. A police marksman comes along and shoots each Jewish woman in the neck with a submachine gun. It is an amazing, shocking and mind-boggling documentary.
