Fun and thoughtful samurai film by the undisputed samurai of all samurai actors, the one and only 三船 敏郎 Mifune Toshirō *** , who, in this film, lent his huge persona as an oafish volunteer to win over his home village’s support for the Emperor's renewable program with promises to cut taxes and eliminate debts. While the plot supplied a ton of humor, deaths, love stories between Samurai and scorned woman, there was a serious social commentary on the hopelessness of peasants despite of the blowing winds of change – never mind indeed, like the chant throughout the film: ええじゃないか ("Ē janai ka," "It's okay! never mind!").

*** Waiting for “Mifune: The Last Samurai,” a documentary on the actor directed by Steven Okazaki and narrated by Keanu Reeves DVD.
