Slow as molasses but still good.

Before considering the movie, it's good to consider the story and the man who wrote it.

J.M. Coetzee is a prize-winning novelist, whose works are as much a study of human nature and motivations as they are "about" their plots. That was true of a previous work, "Disgrace", which was also made into a movie starring John Malkovich and it's true here. That's likely one reason why Malkovich was eager to make the movie, and likely why Johnny Depp was eager to make this one. Neither actor could resist the parts offered.

This time around, the Nobel prize winner wrote the screenplay of "Waiting For the Barbarians", from his own novel and his literary background is obvious, here. Movies are intended to MOVE, and today--more than ever--move FAST.

"Barbarians" doesn't move fast. Fast pace won't serve the purpose of the story. Purpose: show the craziness of colonial warfare through the attitudes and actions of the people involved. Attitudes and actions count for more than "action", so if you're looking for a combat shoot 'em up, you won't find it here. Subdued and slow, Barbarians takes the audience step by step toward chaos and calamity. NOBODY escapes complicity here.

If you appreciate nuance, and the exploration of thoughts and motivations behind actions, then you"ll appreciate this movie. You'll do more than that. You'll also like it. I did. And you won't likely forget it. I won't either.
