For anyone leading a non-profit organisation, this book is a good primer to understand some of the considerations. Most importantly is the fact that in a non-profit, as the leader you must focus on focusing on delivering a high level of quality on the service that you are providing to the community, and to develop the delivery and leadership talent in the organisation. Letts, Ryan and Grossman do a good job of highlighting this second point as an important aspect. Many non-profits fear spending money on developing its staff, as this may seem like overhead. However, winning non-profits develop their staff to enhance the organisations ability to deliver. As a leader of one non-profit, it is an important message that I am going to take to heart, and ensure my voluntary staff get professional development in addition to the good feeling of contributing to society.
