"Chamberlain's depictions of creative beauty and perseverance across time and in the face of inevitable obstacles will keep readers turning the pages."-- Publishers Weekly

"Chamberlain's writing is reminiscent of a quilt made up of pieces from different people, places, and times, stitched together into a single, emotional story."-- Booklist

From bestselling author Diane Chamberlain comes an irresistible new novel.

North Carolina, 2018: Morgan Christopher's life has been derailed. Taking the fall for a crime she did not commit, she finds herself serving a three-year stint in the North Carolina Women's Correctional Center. Her dream of a career in art is put on hold--until a mysterious visitor makes her an offer that will see her released immediately. Her assignment: restore an old post office mural in a sleepy southern town. Morgan knows nothing about art restoration, but desperate to leave prison, she accepts. What she finds under the layers of grime is a painting that tells the story of madness, violence, and a conspiracy of small town secrets.

North Carolina, 1940: Anna Dale, an artist from New Jersey, wins a national contest to paint a mural for the post office in Edenton, North Carolina. Alone in the world and desperate for work, she accepts. But what she doesn't expect is to find herself immersed in a town where prejudices run deep, where people are hiding secrets behind closed doors, and where the price of being different might just end in murder.

What happened to Anna Dale? Are the clues hidden in the decrepit mural? Can Morgan overcome her own demons to discover what exists beneath the layers of lies?

I loved this book. Each chapter went from the past to the present. Interesting twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. Would recommend.

Diane Chamberlain has never disappointed me and she certainly doesn't with this book. What a wonderful story line and I honestly didn't suspect what the ending would be. A definite must read for all lovers of Diane and other authors of similar ilk. Enjoy every word, every page, every chapter.

Morgan Christopher is offered to restore an old mural painted by Anna Dale, an artist from New Jersey in the 1940s, in order to be released from the North Carolina Women's Correctional Center. She quickly learns that the painting has many secrets to share about Anna Dale's disappearance. If you enjoy beautiful writing, multiple plot twists, dual timelines, and intriguing characters, then this book is for you.

I loved this book. I had a really hard time putting it down. There are two stories being told, one of a painter in the 1940's and one of an art student in 2018. Their lives intercept holding the readers interest through out the book. I highly recommend this book.

I think there was a good story in there, even though I guessed the end about 3/4 of the way in. The problem for me was the unbearably amateurish writing and dialog. It was so bad, I was glancing through the pages just to get through the book. In addition, the character development was so superficial, I never cared about any of them.

Quite enjoyed this book. One of the best ones I've read during the pandemic! Mystery, little romance, twists!

Loved the intertwining of history, art, and racism, with a little romance. Quick, but very enjoyable read.
