Egger's follow up to "The Witch" changes the time and setting but still maintains the attention to historical detail and dialect. Still in New England but now in the late 19th century, two men are stuck and alone on an island tending to a lighthouse. The isolation and creepy happening... Read More »

Oh boy, this was a weird one. But beautifully shot, suitably tense and creepy, fairly historically accurate with it's costumes and dialogue, and with two big performances from it's leads. Definitely worth a watch.

A very effective presentation of the madness that can be brought on by forced isolation. The metaphors were a bit over the top though.

This movie is weird in such a great way. The premise is very simple! Two guys are lighthouse keepers and because they’re a bit unsure of each other, they go crazy! Here Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson give their best performances ever! One scene in particular where Pattinson hurts Dafoe’s feelings of his cooking and Dafoe later gives an incredible act! If a constant lack of a narrative is an issue for you, you may find this movie boring. This movie is very ambiguous and answers are very vacant. So that may be a turn off for some. But this film will inspire many! A+

When the movie came out, I vaguely remembered that it was highly rated. After watching it, I was at a loss of why. Filming in black & white added to the feel of the times. The life the men lived was harsh, lonely and unpredictable. The movie just seemed to ramble with no real story.

I watched to the end hoping for some redeeming aspect to emerge. The actors are really good, but the film is without any enjoyable feature. A great director does not make up for a horrible story.

This film is fantastic. The director Robert Eggers is an artist. You might have seen his previous film The Witch which also got rave reviews and is honestly one of the most tense movies I've ever seen. This is a totally different take on the horror genre for Eggers. It blends classic american horror with greek myth to create the allegory to end all allegories. Lots of drinking, lots of masturbation, lots of toxic masculinity.

This is fantastic. A unique stand alone film, you're not going to find another movie similar to this.
If you require a movie that's going to play out exactly as expected without having to think about it this might not be a film you'll enjoy as much.
The acting is really great too. Writing. Cinematography. A+ stuff here strongly consider this

I agree with those who found it hard to watch. I think the problem is the viewer is likely to be outside, electing for an observing role. As the film proceeds, he is likely to abandon any hope that anything affirmative will surface.
Yet, what I see as a reminder that there are relentless forces out there which will be laying claim to us in due time, and remorselessly, qualifies as a job someone thinks worth doing.
Only half the box office of the director's debut, 'The Witch', with which it reportedly has some affinity.
Lear's role seems more moving, perhaps it is closer to human experience.
On the other hand, seaman's shanties heard here might be heard with new ears via the world view of these men who drive each other crazy.
After seeing 'The Witch' Dafoe contacted the director and asked to work with him.

The acting and the gorgeous black and white cinematography are outstanding in this movie. I didn’t find it scary but it is a compelling story about these men falling into madness.

I recommend watching this with subtitles. Unfortunately they can distract from the stunning black & white visuals, but I would have been somewhat lost during the dialogue-heavy scenes without them.

When a movie totally lacks any plot, it really does not matter how well it was filmed...that's just me...stupid movie...wasted my time on this...

Weird just for the sake of being weird . This could have been a great fantasy-drama if the director didn't feel like being pretentious and trying too hard with the symbolism . Great acting though
