Another great installment about gender rules not needing to be a thing. Also friendship and choosing your family are themes in this book.

I feel AraphoeLauraRose's review was the prefect summary of what happened in this volume. It's fantastic as usual and I do hope we get to revisit this world again!

The saga continues! Book 3 focus mainly on Aster and Ariel and the theme of family. (Although Charlie's subplot was great, too. She continues to be an awesome, supportive friend: also, more evidence of her crush on Ariel!) I liked how well Aster's and Ariel's stories complemented each other. Aster, having fought for the support of his close family, is now determined to be recognized as a witch by his extended family. Meanwhile, Ariel questions if she can be a part of the Vanissen family despite her volatile nature and magic. The ending tied everything up nicely! (Of course, if Ostertag decides to write more of these characters, I won't say no!!)

Another great volume. I like seeing the new witches' background and I hope we see more of her mother in future books.

This was just as great as its predecessors! I loved getting to meet more of Aster's family and see more of their dynamic. I love that this story is still all about family and friendship and being true to yourself!

A Great Books for Great Kids pick. Aster is looking forward to the annual Midwinter Festival, where he will compete for the first a witch. Grades 7-8.
