It will not be everyone’s cup of tea, and the style/plot can only be described as quintessential “French”. It is a bright, delightful and vibrant film. One of my favourite Michel Legrand score, as he lets his jazz composition shine.

I wanted to love "Umbrellas", but I was incredibly disappointed in this film. I rented it mainly because I had heard the music used in a skating routine and had also been told that the movie was wonderful. The music is beautiful, but that's about all this film has going for it. First thing you should know when watching this movie; there is NO spoken dialogue. It's ALL in song. You get used to it after a while, but it gives the movie a "cheesy" feel. Plus it's annoying! The storyline is predictable; boy and girl are in love; boy is drafted for two years and the girl says she'll wait for him. The scenery in "Umbrellas" didn't strike me as "beautiful and breathtaking" as everyone says. It just looks like cheap (and very bright) movie sets. This film would have been SO much better if it were a "normal" movie, with spoken words instead of the constant singing. Yes, it was filmed in 1964, but it LOOKS like it. I like movies with a more "timeless" appeal, even if it's apparent that they are from another era. If they had to have singing in this film, they should have made it a real musical, on the lines of "My Fair Lady". where there is both singing and speaking.

I didn't know I liked musicals until Umbrellas of Cherbourg turned me into a puddle. So beautifully melancholic.

I cry everytime I watch this stunning, heartfelt musical. While DONKEY SKIN is my favorite Demy movie to date, this one is a close second.

Saw this classic a number of times and it's sunnier and less melancholic than Umbrellas of C.
Did anyone mention that this is the only film in which Gene Kelly sang every word in French?
Later on, Demy's widow Varda, in her bio, mention that Demy died of AIDS in his California period. For those who haven't seen any of Varda's films, check out The Gleaners & I, Cleo from 5 to 7 and Villages Visages, all available @ BPL.

Bright, buoyant, bubbly French 60s musicals from director Jacques Demy. It's a sort of companion piece to his earlier film, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." Real life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac play sisters. Gene Kelley, Michel PIccoli, and that Shark dude from "West Side Story" co-star. Don't expect much of a plot, but do expect to be charmed. It's like drinking champagne while eating ice cream and cradling a puppy. Demy was married to another pioneering French director, Agnes Varda.

I watched it out of curiosity because it is a famous movie, but was very skeptical and was ready to skip through it. I must admit that the intensely colorful visual style, the singing of every bit of dialogue, and the simple yet profound story captivated me. Having heard of Denueve but knowing very little about her, the audio interview with her in the extra material is enlightening. Her flawless English reveals a strong intellect.

This classic musical from the 1960's directed by Jacques Demy won numerous Academy Awards and introduced American audiences to Catherine Deneuve. Last year's big hit La La Land drew heavily from this movie. Wonderful music by Michel Legrand.
