Shortlisted for the Crime Novel of the Year Award in Iceland
Third Place, Novel of the Year Award 2016 in Iceland, selected by booksellers
One of the bestselling novels in Iceland in 2016

Autumn of 1987 takes a young couple on a romantic trip in the Westfjords holiday--a trip that gets an unexpected ending and has catastrophic consequences.

Ten years later a small group of friends go for a weekend in an old hunting lodge in Elliðaey. A place completely cut off from the outside world, to reconnect. But one of them isn't going to make it out alive. And Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir is determined to find the truth in the darkness.

Ragnar Jonasson burst onto the American scene with Snowblind and Nightblind , the first two novels in the Ari Thor thriller series, and the praise was overwhelming. With The Darkness , he launched a new series featuring a completely new sleuth, Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdottir of the Reykjavik Police department. The Island is the second book in this series.

I agree that this book was shallow. It was missing something. The detective seemed to care a lot about getting promoted and solving the murder seemed secondary. Plus the first murder investigation missed too many clues that there was another person in the cabin besides her father. This is the first and last book I will read.

This one is fine I guess at least nothing is really wrong with it. It is kind of shallow and I think maybe it loses something in a translation possibly. It seems kind of stiff for lack of a better word. It is just not quite up to the standards of these type books from Britain, Sweden, or Norway. I happen to be reading this series in reverse order so my next one will be the first one of the series.

Not my favorite Ragnar Jónasson mystery, but still pretty good. Kristi & Abby Tabby

I enjoyed all Ragnar Jónasson's Dark Iceland novels, and I now try to read any of his work that gets translated into English.
The Island (Elliðaey) is the second in Ragnar's Hidden Iceland series featuring Hulda Hermannsdottir. I already know of Hulda's eventual fate (having read The Darkness) but it doesn't really matter in which order you read the books.
The Island is not full of unnecessary words and this gives it a haunting quality that adds to the atmosphere. Great read!
