The Toronto Ink Company was founded in 2014 by designer and artist Jason Logan as a citizen science experiment to make eco-friendly, urban ink from street-harvested pigments. In Make Ink, Logan delves into the history of inkmaking and the science of distilling pigment from the natural world. Readers will learn how to forage for materials such as soot, rust, cigarette butts, peach pits, and black walnut, then how to mix, test, and transform these ingredients into rich, vibrant inks that are sensitive to both place and environment. Organized by color, and featuring lovely minimalist photography throughout, Make Ink combines science, art, and craft to instill the basics of ink making and demonstrate the beauty and necessity of engaging with one of mankind's oldest tools of communication.

Being a gardener and someone always willing to makes marks on paper or fabric, this book title piqued my interest and was a rewarding read. The author Jason Logan is the owner of the Toronto Ink company and a forager who experiments with plants, minerals and found objects to create ink. Some of his "recipes" such as black walnut ink might be just what you're looking for to create an "ancient manuscript or secret map".
It's a great book for a gardener who often has to remove plant stains from their hands. If sumac or blueberry stains skin it will work on fabric or paper.
He provides the basics of ink making, the plant, mineral or what have you for the color and what is required to fix that color. Not a very thick book but packed with info. Might make an interesting family project. A garden journal for instance with color provided by the garden plants themselves. Logan has a website and while his inks can be ordered online, he encourages exploration.
