Julia Roberts gets pretty devious in order to stop her best friend from marrying the wrong person (i.e. someone who isn't her). She's willing to go to great lengths - including enlisting a friend to play a fake fiance - in order to get her guy.

Filled with plenty of laughs, tears and even musical moments, this romcom is timeless.

Set phasers on charm! In this 1997 romcom Julia Roberts goes to Chicago to break up a wedding. She generally acts like a horrible person, but it's okay because she's Julia Roberts! The most implausible part is that two women would fight over Dermot "D-money" Mulroney, who has trouble standing out from the set. As most have noted, Rupert Everett as the gay best friend is the best part. Cameron Diaz, Rachell Griffiths, and, for like 2 minutes, Paul Giamatti, co-star. Like some other classic romcoms ("When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle"), this relies on standards for its soundtrack. The prequel to "Runaway Bride."

Between seasons 8 and 9 of [Seinfeld], and before the first season of [Will & Grace] and [Sex and the City], shows that taught us that New York City was truly the centre of all existence, there was [My Best Friend’s Wedding], a fun romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Rupert Everett, along with the then largely unknown Cameron Diaz and Paul Giamatti, that I would argue is truly fin de siècle.

Roberts plays Julianne Potter, a lonely and unmarried late-twentysomething New York food critic who finds out that her fallback plan husband, former male best friend, Michael (Mulroney) is marrying a much younger daughter of a billionaire, Kimmy (Diaz)… and in Chicago. Now armed with the basic premise of breaking up a wedding, [My Best Friend’s Wedding] deconstructs that trope with three unlikable and selfish members of a love triangle swimming in a bog composed of anxiety, cynicism, ennui, lies, obsession, pessimism, and vengeance set to the songs of Dionne Warwick. Now, with no one for the audience to root for, let us set back and enjoy the film and its characters unfettered whilst fond memories of many a late-90s cultural artifact return to us: bulky cellphones, Mac OS 7, PowerBooks, a gay best friend (Everett, who plays George and who steals the movie), manual transmissions, Comiskey Park (now Guaranteed Rate Field), email that is read a day later, the scandalous usage of four-letter curse words in a mainstream US film (re: Star Trek Generations), and something that I am so glad that no longer happens today: talking while driving.

Perhaps not all of us will find true love, but at least we can learn, and learn painfully and hilariously, how to let it go.

Let it go, let it go
I’m one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry
Here I stand, and here I’ll stay
Let the storm rage on!

The leading man is totally bland, Julia Roberts is pretty unlikeable, and the whole thing is a bit too mean spirited to really be much fun. I suppose Cameron Diaz should get some props for being such a likeable screen presence that she makes you root for her even though I don’t think that is the filmmaker’s intention.

Julianne Potter: Michael, I love you. I've loved you for nine years. I've just been too arrogant and scared to realize it, and, well, now, I'm just scared, so - I-I-I realize this comes at a very inopportune time, but I really have this gigantic favor to ask of you. Choose me. M-marry me. Let me make you happy. Oh, that sounds like three favors, doesn't it? B-but...
