This book is a throwback. It has the same basic concept as Hatchet but goes in a different route. Sam chose to run away and live in the wilderness, unlike Brian from Hatchet. As a kid, it relates to me more because kids have this idea to run away from home. Reading this book makes it feel like it happened.

For any kid who has ever dreamed of running away or any adult who has ever longed for a new adventure, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George is as refreshing as crisp mountain air. Young Sam Gribley leaves his large family and crowded New York City apartment for the thrill of adventure on his great-grandfather Gribley’s land in the Catskill Mountains. With nothing but a penknife, an ax, some cord, and flint and steel, Sam ingeniously creates a cozy home for himself and learns to live completely off the land while befriending various woodland creatures. Sam spends an entire year on the mountain, learning survival skills and reveling in the natural beauty that surrounds him. Eventually, though, his hard-won lessons in courage and independence cannot overcome his innate desire for human companionship. In our modern times of Instant Pots and high-speed internet, this endearing story reminds us to slow down and enjoy the world around us, wherever that world may be.

I've always wanted to just leave, but I have too much to lose. Although solitary in the middle of nowhere would be nice, it would be so lonely. Plus, when you live in Nebraska, aka the middle of nowhere, home of the infamous Huskers (boooooo great job on those wins Scott Frost 😏), you can't really run of to the mountains and chill all by yourself.

I loved this book when I was in the 5th grade. It's still thrilling and educational and inspiring all these years later for me.

I checked it out because I wanted to see if I remembered it correctly. My brain cells did pretty well. Though I still don't like how it ends, at least now as an adult I understand why it ends that way.

Extremely well wriiten. It's a classic and deserves to be!

Every 5th grader should read this book over the summer and get lost in Sam's world of living off the land. They might even challenge their friends to living without social media for awhile.

I loved it!!!!!!!
It was about living in nature! It looked fun.
Since my parents didn't have time to take us camping or go in nature that much, well the book brought me inside the book. I felt nature all around me. CM 8yo

Joe Biden has dementia. He is just a puppet of the Dems.
They will just have Harris take over if he is President.
