#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Grand Admiral Thrawn and Darth Vader team up against a threat to the Empire in this thrilling novel from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.

"I have sensed a disturbance in the Force."

Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root--its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fierce rivals for the emperor's favor, and outspoken adversaries on Imperial affairs--including the Death Star project--the formidable pair seem unlikely partners for such a crucial mission. But the Emperor knows it's not the first time Vader and Thrawn have joined forces. And there's more behind his royal command than either man suspects.

In what seems like a lifetime ago, General Anakin Skywalker of the Galactic Republic, and Commander Mitth'raw'nuruodo, officer of the Chiss Ascendancy, crossed paths for the first time. One on a desperate personal quest, the other with motives unknown . . . and undisclosed. But facing a gauntlet of dangers on a far-flung world, they forged an uneasy alliance--neither remotely aware of what their futures held in store.

Now, thrust together once more, they find themselves bound again for the planet where they once fought side by side. There they will be doubly challenged--by a test of their allegiance to the Empire . . . and an enemy that threatens even their combined might.

I loved this book. Very character driven. Did not see the ending coming.

It was a decent story, but not having watched Rebels, I was a little out of the loop. I was also hoping they would bring in a bit more from the end of the last THrawn novel to see what the Chiss are up to, but ultimately, it worked. It also proved to me that I forget the end of the original Thrawn trilogy....so, ultimately it was OK, but I liked the first one better

Great story on one of the more interesting characters from the Star Wars Universe.

This is one of those books that leaves you feeling that you WANTED to like it more than you actually did. The structure of jumping back and forth between how Thrawn and Anakin Skywalker first encountered each other during the late stages of the Clone Wars and then are teamed up again by Palpatine around the time period portrayed in TV's "Rebels" series SHOULD make for a more rounded narrative, but I found the secondary characters in BOTH time periods so bland and forgettable that ultimately I found myself forcing myself to the finish line. I'd stick to the first New Canon Thrawn novel unless you are a real completionist.

Easily the worst Star Wars book out to date. Wow, this was just soooo boring. Not interesting at all. I got to about 30 pages to the end and just asked myself, "What am I doing wasting my time with this slog."

I hate to write this, but this is a book about nothing. A part time aide to a senator gets appointed Governor of a planet? The Chancellor receives a alien and promotes him to Admiral in the Navy? Where is the story, and there is ZZZZeeeerroooo action. UUgggggg.

For some reason, this comment section is the same for Thrawn and Thrawn: Allegiances. I guess I'll review both books here?

Thrawn is a fantastic origin story of one of the most beloved Star Wars villains. Longtime fans will find many similarities and parallels to Legends material, repurposed for a new, official story. It proudly stands aside Zahn's original trilogy.

An excellent book, led by my two favorite Star Wars characters, and written by my favorite Star Wars author; what isn't to love about Thrawn: Alliances? Zahn's sequal is an excellent read and good for a Star Wars book, though I personally prefer his older works.

Thrawn: Alliances is a good sequel to Thrawn. I actually liked it a lot better than Thrawn.
This book starts a little bit after the third season of Star Wars Rebels. It switches between Darth Vader and Thrawn working together in the present time to find a 'disturbance' in the force to Anakin and Thrawn working together sometimes during the clone wars to find Padmé after she goes missing looking for one of her former handmaids. Though the beginning felt a little rushed, the rest of the book was fun to read, and it was interesting to see how Thrawn and Anakin met.
I thought it was cool that Timothy Zahn included Padmé and that she also got to meet and work with Thrawn. This book is kind of predictable in some ways, but I was surprised to find out what the 'disturbance' in the force was. It was not what I was expecting at all. Thrawn is of course smart, cunning, observant and calm as always, and Anakin and Padmé's characters are for the most part spot on.
I didn't really like when the book changed to the point of views of other characters like the Chimaera crew or the 501st legion (who are usually fun to read), and I also didn't like Thrawn's kind of annoying micro analyzing of everything and everyone. But in all Thrawn: Alliances was good entry into the new canon. My favorite part was when Anakin, Padmé, and Thrawn all had to work together to escape the Separatist factory, and I'd totally be down for an episode of that (the three of them working together) in the new Clone Wars season.

It's a good book for patient readers who don't mind reading a lot. There is a ton of characters though and it's a hard read.
