"Accompanied by Lane's evocative art that suggests layers of history, Fogliano's story turns this childhood scenario into a radiant poem about the mysteries of other people and the wonderfulness of home." -- New York Times

Deep in the woods
is a house
just a house
that once was
but now isn't
a home.

Who lived in that house? Who walked down its hallways? Why did they leave it, and where did they go?

Two children set off to find the answers by piecing together clues found, books left behind, forgotten photos, and discarded toys, creating their own vision of those who came before, in this deeply moving tale of imagination by Ezra Jack Keats Award-winning author Julie Fogliano and Caldecott Award-winning illustrator Lane Smith.

This is one of the most melancholy picture books I've ever read.

Very deep and quite thought-provoking. I'd like to read this with a group of older children.

A wonderful book written by award winner author, Julie Fogliano, with words that flow and illustrations by Lane Smith that seem to fit the book perfectly.

This is the most beautiful picture book I've read all year. These days the illustrations usually do most of the work in picture books, but here the prose is the star (although the illustrations are wonderful, too). Not much of a story, but a mysterious and poignant reflection by two kids who stumble onto an abandoned house while hiking in the woods. Their imagining what happened there, and who the home's previous occupants were, reads like a Robert Frost poem for kids. A picture book that takes your breath away.
