I’ve just learned of the recent passing of Agnes Varda, and I’ve placed a hold to watch this for a third time. It is an absolutely lovely film on so many levels, a valentine to art, friendship, and integrity.

RIP Agnes Varda (30 May 1928 – 29 March 2019).

I watched that movie several times. Just do not want to forget it. It makes me feel so well

A straight up delight that helps (if only a little) to cast out some of the darkness in the world. It’s a wonderful, shaggy tribute to community and the things that bring us together.

Different and interesting.

Full of guileless charm, warmth and wisps of melancholy. For those who don't know about Agnès Varda: she's the widow of Jacques Demy (who launched Deneuve in Umbrellas of C. and Demoiselles de Rochefort, with Gene Kelly in his only French singing/dancing role). Varda is the only surviving director of the French New Wave (Chabrol, Godard, etc.) and she's getting on years, hopefully this won't be her swan song. Watch for references of her own films such as Cléo from 5 to 7, and The Gleaners and I, an excellent documentary about our waste of food.

A couple of artists created paper murals with giant photographs of ordinary people they met in rural French villages. Interesting creative art form, how they did it, stories of the strangers and their emotional reaction to finished murals. The 89 year old Agnès Varda came across frail at times but some of her youth shined through while ruminating her past and in the company of energetic JR.

We will go to the villages, towards simple landscapes, towards the faces.
-You know, with this truck it's with the I travel the world. People enter from the back, like a photo booth. And the photo comes out in 5 seconds ... on the side, in large format.
Each face has A story. And that day ... It's my last day of work. I'm leaving with early retirement. ... I have the feeling of arriving at the end of a cliff and that tonight I'm going to jump into the void ...
-Oh no!
But I will discover many things. It will be completely different, it will be another life. Tomorrow I'll be home ...
-And tomorrow, what are you going to do?
I think I'm going to sleep all morning.
The bells have a name: the tocsin, the bell of the ladies, the bell of the damsels, the bourdon.

What I liked the most is that we have met incredible people..
-So you prefer that we continue without a plan, without a route?
Yes, because chance has always been the best of my assistants.
Salt has been our raw material, since the creation of this factory. By electrolysis they divide ... the two molecules that make up the salt: chlorine and sodium. And so we produce hydrochloric acid.
It's a portrait party and a picnic. So we have brought a great photographic truck. And we would like to take your photos.
Agnes with eye problems: I'm happy, that's what I see.
JR with his dark sunglasses on: So, you see blurry and, are you happy?
Agnes: And you, you see everything dark and you are happy? Let's say it depends on how we see things.
... it's very beautiful from above.
-Look for me. Well, I already did my exercise to all week, it's fine.
Good. Not bad. Seen from here, what do you say?
-It's okay! Now the fish are happy. They give life to the tower.

It's a joke.
-I do not like those jokes. Because I'm not mystical in absolute, I'm in life.
It's amazing. But art is also for soprender (surprise in French), right?
Now let's get busy of the water tower. And where there is water, there are fish.
I love this committed woman. We wanted to know more about her.
... And also about this mare.
-Fanfan? She watches over property all the time. Watch the goats. If something happens or if a group it moves away, whinny to warn me.
We met an artist who likes words. After each meeting, to me, it's always the last time. I'm tired of listening to him. But we bounce like cats. A seated cat makes us wise.
You know, I was born in the shade of a star. My mother, the moon, gave me its freshness. My father, the sun, his warmth ... And the universe to live. You realize? I have a great place in life.

Where was this man naked looking at the sea, a boy and the goat.
-It was in 1954 in Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer. A beach that I know well. I have often wandered for that region ... and about that part that I love, and those deserted beaches ... It was also during a long motorcycle trip. Between Saint-Aubin and Sainte-Marguerite, ...
You have one of the few flocks ... in which the goats have horns.
-For me, if a goat has horns, he must keep his horns. I will not eliminate them ... Anyway, I think ... I do not find a normal explanation ... or if we do not consider what is a product ... that should have a yield rate. And then, we eliminate all the parameters ... that can reduce that profitability ... and they take their horns. It is done. They burn them and that's it. But if you do it with respect for animals, in my case, I keep them intact. If they have horns, they keep their horns. They fight. Humans also fight.

Excellent! These are wrinkles, it's nice, huh? You get to do ... You have muscles in the wrinkles.
You put a lot ... attention with the elderly and elderly.
-It is true.
And where does that interest come from?
-Comes... because I've always been surrounded by little old people. I grew up with them.
-Yes My grandmothers lived in my house. I also looked after another old lady on the landing. She was the one who took care of me ... and I ended up staying.
The next morning we went to see. The tide erased the image. Images ephemeral, I'm used to it. But the sea erased it too quickly. The sea is always right ... And the wind ... And the sand ... The image was gone. We were going to disappear too.

I have two combine harvesters, a rotary harrow, a plow, a stubble cultivator, a planter, a roller compactor, a canadian.
-So, do not you have to do anything?
Actually, I consider myself a stroller on a tractor.
-What has changed in the profession? Has it been for better or for worse?
Eh ... We've become asocial, of course. Because before, in a farm of 200 hectares you hired ... at least 3 or 4 people. And today... Then, 800 hectares. And today, I am alone and cultivate 800 hectares, alone.
-But he likes to be alone?
I like to be alone
He is an old friend of yours?
-Do not say "old friend". Say "lifelong friend". It is more respectful with older people even when... I have seen him very little since those years when we were friends.
How many women drive trucks?
-In my company, I am the only one. There must be 80 drivers at this time.

JR responds what I love most: the faces that I find, photograph them so they do not disappear quickly ... in the holes of my memory.
Let's say that in the year 56, was 14 years old.
-Oh yes, he was an apprentice.
The mining profession, you learn. 30 years at the bottom of the mine. To earn your wages, you had to ... prop up 150 posts. After that, I had to
dedicate myself to coal.
He spoke to us enchanted of his father's life ... That he was a miner.
-Well, he was leaving with his great bread, a very big bread, like this ... full of butter ... everything, to eat at the bottom of the gallery. If you did not finish it, he put it back in his suitcase ... and then it went up. We were small, we ran, our father came back with his lark bread.
What's that, lark bread?
-Oh! Our piece of bread all dirty. And we loved it! We loved it! because he was coming back from the bottom from the mine, and the bread.
