"Jonathan Evison's voice is pure magic. In Lawn Boy , at once a vibrant coming-of-age novel and a sharp social commentary on class, Evison offers a painfully honest portrait of one young man's struggle to overcome the hand he's been dealt in life and reach for his dreams. It's a journey you won't want to miss, with an ending you won't forget."
-- Kristin Hannah, author of The Nightingale

For Mike Muñoz, a young Chicano living in Washington State, life has been a whole lot of waiting for something to happen. Not too many years out of high school and still doing menial work--and just fired from his latest gig as a lawn boy on a landscaping crew--he knows that he's got to be the one to shake things up if he's ever going to change his life. But how?

In this funny, angry, touching, and ultimately deeply inspiring novel, bestselling author Jonathan Evison takes the reader into the heart and mind of a young man on a journey to discover himself, a search to find the secret to achieving the American dream of happiness and prosperity. That's the birthright for all Americans, isn't it? If so, then what is Mike Muñoz's problem? Though he tries time and again to get his foot on the first rung of that ladder to success, he can't seem to get a break. But then things start to change for Mike, and after a raucous, jarring, and challenging trip, he finds he can finally see the future and his place in it. And it's looking really good.

Lawn Boy is an important, entertaining, and completely winning novel about social class distinctions, about overcoming cultural discrimination, and about standing up for oneself.

In a nutshell this book is terrible. It started out disturbing when the main character's father plays a cruel joke on him and it just goes downhill from there. I was hoping I would like this one because I did like "Harriet Chance", but for starters, I hate Mike Munoz. That in itself is not a good sign. He's supposed to be Hispanic but he's not written that way at all. Don't get me started on the language. I was willing to overlook it for the most part but it was just too much. I'm starting to wonder if it is possible for anyone to write a good story without the constant need for swearing and disgusting situations. Even the chapter titles are swear words. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I just don't see the point in using the same words over and over. The only thing that I enjoyed about this book was that it takes place in Washington State but honestly that's not saying much.

This book seems light, but it also is dealing with several important issues. It's both a fun coming-of-age story and a springboard into discussions about very real social issues.

I agree with the other two reviewers. The book is very funny with a strong serious undertone about the life and changes of an individual.
Most enjoyable.

I found this book in the audio version. I think this is an important read and it needs as much exposure as possible. The development of the main character, Mike Munoz was so powerful, sensitive, inciteful, believable, relatable, I actually looked at the authors name again...thinking, this has got to be a autobiography. I have thought about this book over and over since I finished it a few weeks ago. Best Read for me in a long time. Please share this book with others. It really makes you think.

"Lawn Boy" is both funny and serious. It's also smart and refreshingly different; the main characters' struggles and challenges are down-to-earth and true-to-life. Recommended.
