Five women go on a hike. Only four return. Jane Harper, the New York Times bestselling author of The Dry, asks: How well do you really know the people you work with?

When five colleagues are forced to go on a corporate retreat in the wilderness, they reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking down the muddy path.

But one of the women doesn't come out of the woods. And each of her companions tells a slightly different story about what happened.

Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing hiker. In an investigation that takes him deep into isolated forest, Falk discovers secrets lurking in the mountains, and a tangled web of personal and professional friendship, suspicion, and betrayal among the hikers. But did that lead to murder?

" Force of Nature bristles with wit; it crackles with suspense; it radiates atmosphere. An astonishing book from an astonishing writer."
--A.J. Finn, author of The Woman in the Window

Excellent! I liked it even better than The Dry, which I liked a lot. Very happy to have found a new mystery series.

Aaron Falk has a new partner Carmen and travels to a remote Australian national park when whistleblower Alice Russell, who’s been helping them, goes missing on a company team-building retreat.

The park’s remoteness and dense vegetation, along with the rainy weather, make for an atmospheric setting. [It was disappointing to learn the park was fictional!] If I had to sum this up in a sentence, I’d say one doesn’t know what they’d do for their family. All the characters carried years-old interpersonal baggage with serious trust issues. Interesting reading. A little contrived.

I didn't realize that this was book #3 so I don't know if reading the earlier ones would have increased my understanding or enjoyment. Overall, I did find this intriguing enough to read it all the way to the end, and the finale was definitely interesting!

I found this quite enjoyable as I love this genre and I have enjoyed both books in this series so far. I did enjoy The Dry better as I felt that Aaron's character was more interesting in the first book and, while I was really captivated with the mystery in this one until the end, I did find the ending a little underwhelming. However, definitely worth reading.

Another enjoyable mystery thriller by Jane Harper. My only complaint with this one (and I had similar issues with The Dry) is that she has multiple subplots happening but doesn't develop them thoroughly. I wish she would do a better job of fleshing out her storylines and threading them all together instead of ending one with a BANG! and letting the rest fizzle out. Overall, though, a good read and I look forward to carrying on with the series.

I was lost early on and found little to like in the characters.

This was a really suspenseful book! I literally could not put it down. We read this for a book club; so I wasn't aware that there is a 1st book, "The Dry". I gave it 5 stars because the story was very interesting and kept me wanting to read more. It's sort of a Locked Room type of mystery.

What happens when a group of coworkers head into the Australian wilderness for a mandatory team building exercise? One of them might not make it out alive. Harper's tale of a corporate retreat gone horribly wrong is atmospheric, unsettling, and a highly addictive read. Perfect for fans of the BBC series "Top of the Lake," this is one crime drama you won't want to miss.

A New & Noteworthy Best of 2018 pick. Five women head out on a weekend corporate team building exercise in the rugged mountains of Australia, but only four return.

A good writer weaving a tale from several viewpoints. The ladies of the retreat eventually emerge as a rather unlikeable group . This type of Outward Bound corporate training often will bring out the worst in individuals especially purely urban folk. Rather than bonding together out in the wild they seem to go sort of feral and that is the result here, nastiness to the fore.
