Jeez. Welcome to Hell. Incredible performances, but an hour would have been long enough to get the idea that this family put the ‘fun’ in dysfunctional. Criticize, compliment, berate, forgive, hound, excuse, condemn, castigate, extol, berate, I was exhausted. Such a roller coaster ride of bipolar-ness and frenzy..

With only four characters (well, five, if you include the cook) and a few rooms, this insightful play exposes all sorts of anguish: of disease, of lost hopes, of loss of children, of misplaced lessons learned from life, of failure, of addiction, of isolation, and much else besides. There were rather too many cutbacks and close-ups, and very little music. Despair upon aguish upon doom.

Great performance of the American Theater's greatest play. Excellent cast. Hepburn is especially stunning.

Beautiful black & white. But very long, "psychological" and set-bound. Katharine Hepburn is marvelous.

This should be called "LOOOOOONG Day's Journey into Night." The acting was great but the story and characters are so dreary and depressing, they're all addicts of some kind. Worst of all, this is an autobiographical play, I feel very sorry for Eugene O'Neill and his family.

If you like soul wrenching theatre, I recommend this film. Honest cinematography of Boris Kaufman (also shot "On the Waterfront," &"L'Atalante") helps us get into Eugene O'Neils characters.
I loved the acting of Jason Robards as he really gets in touch with the character he plays.
