The Italian setting is very beautiful. The performances were authentic and heartfelt. It was a lovely film to watch. I also, however, found it very slow-paced and not a whole lot really happens. I also found the age different between the two main characters made it a little creepy.

This movie is impossibly beautiful, and I mean that in all ways: visually, emotionally, intellectually, etc. Timothée Chalamet gives an astounding, emotionally mature performance. It is a travesty that he didn’t win the Oscar. Am I in love with him? Maybe. Will this review just be me yelling abou... Read More »

A poignant coming-of-age drama set in 1980s Italy explores the budding relationship between seventeen-year-old Elio and Oliver, a handsome doctoral student who's working for Elio's father.

If you are looking for a movie about pseuds, you needn't look further.

After the 15 minute mark, I was hoping that the golfers from Michael Haneke's "Funny Games" would arrive and illustrate their "knee-driver" technique. Later, the whole family could be given lessons (including the (oh so) lovable Olly) in swimming in the local pond while being tied, gagged and weighted.

Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed and I had to endure Pa's lecture on the lovable Olly and the tribulations of life to the sobbing Elio. So sad!

A weak love story of two young boy/man taking place in a beautiful environment in northern Italy. Slow but there is good acting moments.

This movie was one of the best I have watched ever. It does not go in the typical direction of GLBTQA movies, with the typical fluffy happy ending...

There were a few odd things, like the age difference, 17 to maybe 24? What 7 years difference, not that big of a deal as my grandparents are 7 years apart, she was 15 he was 22 with a newborn baby.... The odd part with the age, is maybe the laws are different in Italy than the USA, and probably different between Italy's 1983 laws and 2018 laws as well. The parents did not have a problem with it, neither did the couple. They even talk about Oliver trying to give Elio clues he was interested, but when shrugged off, Oliver felt as if he was inappropriate, turns out it wasn’t... Also with the hush, hush, they are in PUBLIC talking about sleeping together, but then go into the talk of regret and how Elio says he wouldn't get Oliver into any trouble. So it is a bit confusing as to the legality of the relationship is it legal or not?

The story line is believable, reminded me of my first relationship, one minute it’s on, the next it is off as both don't want to get hurt, but do anyway. The few sad parts I felt, is the fact Elio used the girl twice... Why do that to her if you know you want him??? The part I felt showed the relationship to be more serious to Elio is when he is with the girl, not nervous not shy, just like a mission to do, however when Elio is about to have his first encounter with Oliver, he says he is nervous, he is very reserved as it means more to him. The movie does have the double standard, during the encounters of male/female they show more than when the encounters of male/male, not talking about graphic, but the camera always seemed to move away... But that could be due to the actors comfort zones, as they are straight playing gay.... The second part was the lack of communication at the final moments before Oliver boards the train... If I was in either persons place it wouldn't have been like that.

Then the phone rings.... I wanted to jump in the movie and pull Oliver through the phone. To not only break Elio’s heart, but to call up during the holidays to rub SALT into that wound, I was hoping for the call to be a ruse to let Elio think Oliver was out of the country, to see Oliver walking in the front door... I was disappointed but not all love stories can have that happy ending.

This movie is well worth the time, for those that LOOK for the deeper meanings, not just the typical fluff.

The acting felt forced and awkward throughout the film. The passion between characters falls flat.
It needs a good remake with some seasoned actors and a great director.

I see many other people had the same response I did! I was so looking forward to this film, and then I quickly got bored and didn't finish it.

Wanted to see this movie to see what all the acclaim was about. I knew it was about a gay romance, so I was not surprised or put off by the story line. What I can't get over is how utterly boring it was! Seriously...a total snooze fest! Painfully slow...I kept watching because I had to believe it would get interesting; however, it never did! The great love story that everyone talks about just did not come across for me! The only good thing about this movie was the beautiful scenery as it is set in Italy! But, seriously, don't waste your time!

Is this movie "cinematic bliss," "lovely and wise", "wonderfully paradoxical," or just a load of shite?!!!!!!!!!!!! You be the judge for this guy can only visualize what might happen if some horny dude tried the old "come on" in my direction. But seriously folks - do your research regards this picture and don't be sold on the accolades that accompany the DVD. It may be worth noting that "Call Me By Your Name" is the third entry of a motion picture trilogy. I suspect those who found this a riveting movie experience have their reasons so as always you pays your money and you takes your chances!

I was uncomfortable with the reactions of the father. He said this was a good experience for his son. What? With so much discussion of older men using power over younger women and men. This was not romantic. It was an older man seducing a young BOY. In Italy this is okay? This is okay as a grad student? The boy was still confused at the end of the film.

"Then let me say one more thing. It'll clear the air. I may have come close, but I never had what you two have. Something always held me back or stood in the way. How you live your life is your business, just remember, our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once. And before you know it, your heart is worn out, and, as for your body, there comes a point when no one looks at it, much less wants to come near it. Right now, there's sorrow, pain.
