One of my all-time favorite movies; a beautifully filmed treat that I can happily watch again and again. Robert Downey Jr. does an outstanding job of embodying Charlie Chaplin, from ambitious young man through to his twilight years. As with all biopics it can be hard to condense a long, eventful life into the running time of a movie, and I think Richard Attenborough did an excellent and entertaining job of taking us through the key points of Chaplin's life: from his troubled youth growing up in terrible poverty at the end of Victorian-era England and dealing with his mother's mental illness, to his early successes in vaudeville and then as a visionary pioneer in the nascent world of cinema. Attenborough deftly folds in references to Chaplin's works as he tells the tale of his life, focusing largely on his relationships with women, his perfectionism with his craft, and his troubled relationship with the young and rabidly anti-communist J. Edgar Hoover. All of the settings are just gorgeous and bring us right into Chaplin's world. A ribbon of sentimentality weaves through the film which at times colors scenes in a particular way. There are lots of fun cameos, and Geraldine Chaplin is also noteworthy for her moving portrayal of her grandmother, Charlie's mum.

A phenomenal depiction of some of Hollywood's early days, drawn from Chaplin's memoirs (and presented in such a way that it's clear his telling absolutely holds various biases). Robert Downey, Jr., shines as Chaplin himself, but everyone involved is excellent.

Whether it is completely accurate or not, a sympathetic portrait of Chaplin with great heart. Downey's acting is amazing. An amusing conceit is the portrayal of some events as if they were part of a Chaplin silent movie. (It helps to have some knowledge of the Chaplin canon in order to identify the films referenced in this movie, as well as some vignettes that are implied to have inspired some scenes in Chaplin films.)

Excellent extras - including interviews with director Attenborough and a Chaplin biographer, candid and informative; "home movie" by a young Alistair Cooke of Chaplin, Paulette Goddard and Cooke on cruise to Catalina. The biopic includes memorable performances by Robert Downey, Jr., and Geraldine Chaplin. Many interesting people portrayed including Chaplin, his mother and brother; Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford; Paulette Goddard; Oona O'Neill; J. Edgar Hoover, etc.

I have seen this movie so many times and each time I have enjoyed it just as much as the last time. Robert Downey Jr. gives a spectacular performance as the great Charile Chaplin. Honestly one of my favorite biographical films.

Remarkable intimate portrayal of an outstanding public figure.
Robert Downey Jr. became Charles Chaplin without delivering a caricature. Excellent film!

I always thought Richard Attenborough was a terrible director and this film did nothing to change my opinion. But, like Ghandi, the movie is saved by an amazing performance by the lead actor, in this case Robert Downey Jr. There were thousands of Chaplin imitators when Chaplin was at the peak of his fame and popularity but Downey really managed to capture Chaplin's genius. But if you really want to laugh hard and see what all the fuss was about rent Modern Times. Or view the boxing match in City Lights.

Even more impressive than the directing, is Robert Downey Jr's performance.

Douglas Fairbanks: Say, are you two still married or what? I find it all very confusing.
Charlie Chaplin: Mmm... it's not at all confusing. You see, when everyone thought we were having an affair, we were married. Now that everyone realizes we're married, we're getting divorced.
Douglas Fairbanks: Man's a wizard with women. No question about it.
