David Percival: "It's a double pleasure to deceive the deceiver."
Lorraine Broughton: Niccolo Machiavelli. It was on your shelf.
David Percival: Oh my God, I think I f*cking love you!
Lorraine Broughton: That's too bad.
Gone fxcking feral. Berlin is the Wild West. If that bloody wall comes crashing down, we don't want to be under it. If the Russians get that list, we're all buggered sideways.

If it'd make you more comfortable, I could stand behind the mirror with everybody else. But it's a little crowded back there.

We were just going over your file. I see your Russian is excellent. An expert in escape and evasion. Proficient in intelligence collection and hand-to-hand combat. It's an impressive set of skills. Knowing the Reds as I do, she'll need to use every damn one of them.
It's an atomic bomb of information that could extend the Cold War for another 40 years.

Without that list, why shouldn't I take you outside and shoot you in the fxcking head?

You know those movies where the picture just starts to slow down... and melt? Then catch fire?Well... that's Berlin.

You know, I've been in Berlin a long time, and I think I know every doorman of every decent shithouse, borderline decent flophouse both sides of the wall.

It's like walking a tightrope or playing the bagpipes. You can either do it or you can't.

You expose this bastard, Satchel, and we'll hang him for treason. You might find yourself taking tea at Buckingham Palace.

East Berliners stormed the West German embassies in Czechoslovakia earlier this week, as the Czech government has begun to wave the refugees through checkpoints with few questions. One has to ask how long the East Berlin government can hold on...

Add a CommentI finally watched this due to the awesome soundtrack, and James McAvoy. The story is about a female agent who is sent to checkout if there is a traitor in MI6, and track down a inconveniently missing list of double agents. She is a cool artic blond fighting machine. I did enjoy the fight scenes, the soundtrack, and action. James burned up the screen as usual. However, C. Theron never made me care about her character, who another poster compared to James Bond. Bond shows some compassion and caring, but this agent was just too cold, and calculating in an effort to make her seem more tough, and invincible. This is a mistake I see in movies right now, over and over trying to make the women characters harder, without the balance of some human fragility.
Do you like cold war intrigue, danger, and double crosses? Everyone's a spy with lots of secrets. Do you like high-octane, pulse-pounding, brutal, spectacular action scenes. Well, it's got those too.
I finally got around to watching this after having this for so long. It's basically like the flipside to the James Bond films. While it does have it's elegant settings, much of the films takes place in the gritty underbelly of Cold War Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Most of the characters save one operate in a grey area that makes seeing who's friend and who's foe difficult. The standout for me were the fight scenes. They were bloody and brutal.
99- out-of-100 Luftballons. That doesn't mean owls. It means balloons. Like, what you have at a birthday party. Not Charlie Sheen's birthday party. Your kid's. Not my kid's.
"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" The Berlin Wall Speech is a great moment in history, and I was glad to see it included here.
Extra points for Theron doing all her own fight scenes!
So tiresome. Always nice to look at Theron--that body still holds up--but story is silly and talented actors wasted in banal roles.
The action is good, the intrigue a little too boilerplate. Theron is beautiful to watch and listen to. All in all a workmanlike job that fills up a rainy Saturday.
This movie is a slog. It reminded me of my experience watching movies as a little kid, where I could appreciate the action and vaguely knew who was supposed to be good or bad and could sense the peril that people may have been in, but had no real clue as to the actual plot. I can't imagine who would actually pay close enough attention or be entertained enough to follow all the twists and turns. Oh that guy is the good guy, wait now he just became the bad guy, wait now he said this comment, clearly he's actually been the good guy all along. Whatever. No one smiled in this cold joyless movie and no one will smile watching it. There is a somewhat redeeming long no-cut action shot on a staircase near the end. It is technically impressive and owed to the audience after enduring the first hour+.
