What can you say clearly they hire Scarlett Johansson for name recognition not acting because she had about as good acting ability as Keanu Reeves in the Matrix. The white washing of this film is so hilarious when Hollywood is one big SJW haven. Scarlett Johansson is such a SJW hypocrite she should have stepped down and suggest they use a Asian actor. The CGI was bad. Fight scenes in the dark you can not see anything. Set in Japan but most the main characters are not Japanese. I about let out a chuckle when at the beginning of the movie they tell her that she was on a refugee boat that was bombed. I will believe that when John Wayne is Genghis khan.

So I've seen both Ghost in the Shell (2017) and Ghost in the Shell (1995), and I honestly think you cannot compare these two movies. The older one is an animated take on the concept of singularity and what it means to be human, and the newer one wrestles with the idea that your memories don't define you, your actions do. (Which if you think about it, makes no sense because the moment you cease an action it becomes a memory.) One is calm, slow, nuanced study that walks you through everything but draws no conclusions for you, and the other is a tight, frantic action movie that has time to splice in it's messages to you amidst the chaos. They're not the same film.
Both films are adaptations of Masamune Shiro's (I spell it Shiro, not Shirow, since "W" doesn't exist in the Japanese lexicon and the "W" is simply there to aid westerners in speaking) manga. The 1995 film is, in fact, NOTHING like the manga, lacking most of the worldbuilding and upping the action. It changed to suit a Japanese reader's expectations to a Japanese viewer's expectations. Don't criticize the 2017 film for doing the same.
I also saw the 2017 film before the 1995 film, and it impacted me and stuck out to me just as much as the 1995 film. This, I think, speaks to how hard everyone on the team tried.

This film is a good movie, and an excellent adaptation.

"Overall, this movie is boring. It’s really boring. It has some cool stuff going on, but not enough that really keep someone’s attention. Not all of the acting is bad, most notably Juliette Binoche, and some of the visuals are really cool. The vastness of the city they’re living in, looks really good when we get a lot of overhead shots. There is also one action scene in particular where Major chases down a garbage man to a lake? I guess and that was a pretty cool action scene. Otherwise, the characters are really bland and forgettable..."

Such a confused story. effects for the sake of effects. Scarlett Johannsen has played so many artificial people/extraterrestrials/robots, it is getting tiresome. Juliette Binoche seems lost in the proceedings.

It pays homage to the original with its music, lots of the scenes and same type characters. I personally love the way it was done. They did a good job with effects and it was dazzling! It also had a OK plot twist too. I think people unfamiliar with the series or some of the differences in culture may not get this movie. Still, as someone who has seen the original and the anime, I can assure you it fits well. I liked it...

Scarlett went a bit overboard with the deadpan delivery. Hard to blame her since there was little in the way of inspiring dialogue (for any of the characters).
Interesting "Dark Secret" type plot but still a few marks south of the snooze line.

I have not see the earlier animated movies and tv versions (1995 - 2015), based on the 1989 manga comic, written by Shirow Masamune, 'Mobile Armored Riot Police: Ghost in the Shell.'
I did like this film as an interesting topic of cyborg (part human, part robotic or "enhanced") law enforcement officers. There are similarities in story and in visual effects of two primary films that I can think of, the 1985 Blade Runner and the 1987 Robocop.
I think the primarily stone faced, Scarlett Johansson (Lucy, 2014; 2016's Captain America: Civil War;and Sing - voice; Avengers: Infinity War, 2018) fits this film well, with a hint of some emotion, as one should with a human brain inside a robotic body. This is perhaps my complaint of the film, is that the film could have been better with more emotional conflict displayed on screen, which suggests a lack of acting by Scarlett.
No bonus material on the DVD.

It hard to see this comparing it to original. It seem like often 1:1 copy but with lower quality. It could of been better on it own. Nothing extraordinary but good. Original has better pace, better editing and looks better in making sense department.

Instructive, as in "how to make bad decisions, then get disastrous results" - that is (relative to some comments here), THAT is what the dialog is for. We extend hope, we give up, we extend hope again... then... SPOILER ALERT: not the ending we wanted after all the trouble. Could be a set up for a part II (?)

I enjoyed this one. I can see why it took two years to make it due to the special effects in the story. The main character makes some statements close to the end of the film about "the ghost in the shell"that I take as a christian to be about the soul.

Find many memorable quotes in IMDb already, these two in particular:

You are more than just a weapon. You have a soul... a ghost. When we see our uniqueness as a virtue, only then will we find peace.
We cling to memories as if they define us, but... they really don't. What we do is what defines us.
