Friendship gives way to something more in this first book in New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray's Charmed Amish Life series

Three months ago, Darla Kurtz's father was responsible for a terrible fire at Charm's lumber mill which killed five Amish men. Though her father lost his life, too, the town hasn't looked at her family the same since. The accident already cost lives, but if something doesn't change soon, Darla fears it will cost her even more.

Lukas Kinsinger is feeling overwhelmed. Not only is he now the head of his father's lumber mill, he's also responsible for taking care of his three younger siblings. Darla has been his close friend, but after the accident there has been tension between them, making him feel more alone than ever. When he learns of her troubles at home, Lukas knows someone has to help her before another tragedy occurs.

As Lukas and Darla discover something deeper than friendship, will the pain of the past overcome their chance of future happiness?

This reader was charmed by this Amish romance set in Charm, Ohio.

From the first page, I was immersed in the lives of the characters. This isn't just another Amish light read.

Following a tragedy at the lumber mill, Lukas and Darla immediately find themselves as the leaders within their own families. We are introduced to other characters as well and observe how they are reacting to these changes.

The romance between Lukas and Darla is based upon their long friendship and mutual respect along with some great chemistry. I loved the gentle evolution of the realization of their feelings. Peaceful sigh-worthy!

The author lists an Amish proverb before the first chapter. "Reach up as far as you can. God will reach the rest of the way." This is so true and such a beautiful expression. Also listed is a verse from the Bible regarding forgiveness (Matthew 6:14). Another central theme of this novel is the acceptance of support from others.

Due to the domestic abuse issue in the novel, I would not recommend this book to teenagers.

Don't miss the cute illustrated map in the front of the book or the recipe for White Chocolate Cranberry Blondies in the back!
