This film by Scottish director David Mackenzie is about the coming of age of a troubled young man. Well directed and well acted by the entire cast. As in 'Young Adam', there are some very sensual and erotic scenes here.
Very broadly this is about a boy bridging into maturity while making his way in big-city Scotland. Isolated and voyeuristic, he's clearly odd yet totally familiar to any ex-youth for being so; angry but always compelling in his innocence, and often even sweet. Disturbed by the unclear circumstances of his mother's death, by twisted relations with his new, wide-eyed stepmother, and with missing his absent sister, this troubled youth is most unlikely to resemble many others - beyond their inmost thoughts. The story is Scots-based, and compelling as ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ but more akin to ‘Harold and Maude.’ Ciaran Hinds plays the father; all others are unknowns yet equally strong talents. If an unusual take on coming of age appeals, and especially if adolescence still resonates somewhere in your gut, this may be for you.
