The Wailing has to be one of the biggest disappointments ever, considering that it was written and directed by the same guy who did The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, two of the greatest Korean movies ever.

Basically, it's two and a half hours of being jerked around -- excruciatingly slowly -- to no purpose. In retrospect, the plot twists don't even make sense. It's difficult to evaluate the acting in light of the horrible script. For genre fans, the worst news is that the Wailing isn't even very scary. Dramatically speaking, I ended up losing all sympathy for the hero, his family and the victims by the end of the story, which is a major statement considering the hell they are put through. Even the cinematography, which is often rich and evocative, has flaws. In one downpour, the sun is clearly shining. Several times, scenes were so dimly lit that the geography of the sets was unclear.

I slogged through a long, long movie because I couldn't bring myself to believe that a movie written and directed by Na Hong-jin could be completely worthless. I took one for the team so you won't have to.

Don't be suckered in by Na Hong-jin's incredible past work. Avoid like herpes.

Overly long, not scary, and the ending was bad.

I'm at the point now where I say you can't go wrong with a Korean movie made in the last 20 years. Of course, here in North America and through the library system, we're seeing what crosses the Pacific: the best of the best. Still, when I picked The Wailing, just because it was Korean, I got what I've come to expect: an ambitious story, a bold mix of tragic and comedic, technical expertise, and first class performances. Everyone from the director to the background extras are giving it their all. There's more energy and inventiveness in this one film than in the majority of recent North American supernatural-themed films combined. ETA: reading the comments, I think I can explain why some people find the story confusing or "bad". Korean films, and this one especially, do what Westerners would call mixing genres. In this case, horror is mixed with healthy doses of drama, comedy, social observation and the supernatural. No, it's not going to do the usual Hollywood A, B, and C; it is a unique story that does not have a predictable ending and doesn't do the usual horror things to get there. I have attached Renegade Cut's excellent review, but suggest watching the film first, with an open mind.

Sorry to disagree with some of the other commenters - - and yes, I did grasp the story line - - but I found this movie to be overall mediocre to submediocre, guess I've seen far too many superior K-movies and series to accept this as above-average.

Beautiful nature. So different life and people. Interesting rituals. With kind smile.

I admit it was quite long, but that's to build suspense, so if you don't like that feeling then this movie is not for you. It's also very confusing and like most Korean films has comedy, tragedy, horror and drama all wrapped into one. But this film has a purpose, so you won't feel like it's a waste of time as some other movies (cough, cough, "Uncle Bonmee" and "Last Life in the Universe).

There's definitely a purpose and you, as a reader, must decide for yourself who is what without seeing everything as if it's spoon fed to you, your imagination counts. I think many non-Christians will be absolutely baffled by this film. With that, I highly suggest you read the 4 canonical Gospels first, before attempting to watch this movie. You won't survive without them.

One of the best movies I've seen by far and I've seen many, many films.

Nominated in many categories in the Korean Academy Awards, the 53rd Grand Bell Awards but lost the big categories (Picture, Screen Play, Actor and Director) to "Inside Men (Hangul: 내부자들; RR: Naebujadeul.)" The movie started out with a bumbling detective called to investigate a bloody multiple murder and when more dead bodies piled up, various superstitious elements with occult characters like shamans, zombies and catholic clergies were introduced. Ultimately, the film fell along the line of the "Exorcist" genre, war between the good and the evil spirits, with innocent villagers caught in the wake. Because of the ever evolving story and the anything-goes supernatural theme, the director's comments were reassuring on the interpretation of the highly ambiguous ending sequences:

Interview: ‘The Wailing’ Director Na Hong-jin On Death, Genre, Religion & Comedy:

Note: Can't imagine all those bad language in English Captions are actual dialogues in Korean.

Long, gory and confusing.

Ok this movie is pretty damn confusing. The middle was actually funny to me in a non-deliberate, and ridiculous manner.
Now without spoiling, you should know that anyone can be posessed at any time. I thought that maybe a certain thing is faking it. This is not the case. Instead, it's really more of a demon exiting and entering. Don't worry, this information still probably won't allow you to make sense of it without resorting to Reddit.
Just remember that in this movie, a bad person still has a tiny shred of good in them. The movie's plot falls apart if you believe that someone is falsely acting like a human like I did. The movie is designed to make you not know what to believe anymore, which is what made it so darn confusing.

What difference does it make? They're dead, its not like you can save them.
Sergeant, have you ever tried those kinds of mushrooms..?
-Never tried it you dick...
Mushrooms don't do that to people.
Halmeoni says the weh-nom is actually a ghost. He sucks on your blood and kills you...
(Note: Weh-nom: Ethnic slur against people of Japanese descent.)
When you go fishing, do you always know what you're going drag out..?
This xxyyzz is fishing, it doesn't know what it'll pull out either. Threw out the bait and your daughter just happened to notice it. That's all there is to it!
Why is all of this happening?!
-The father of the daughter has sinned...
What? What sin did I commit..?
-The father of the daughter has plotted against others. He has even tried to kill. And he has killed...
