Updated with a new chapter on Carroll's successful first season with the Seattle Seahawks

Pete Carroll is one of the most successful coaches in football today. As the head coach at USC, he brought the Trojans back to national prominence, amassing a 97-19 record over nine seasons. In this book he shares the championship-winning philosophy that led USC to seven straight Pac-10 titles, and is now shaping his program with the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL.

Carroll developed his unique coaching style by trial and error over his career. He reveals how his recruiting strategies, training routines, and game-day rituals preserve a team's culture year after year, during championship seasons and disappointing seasons alike.

Win Forever is about more than winning football games; it's about maximizing your potential in every aspect of your life. Carroll has taught business leaders facing tough challenges. He has helped troubled kids on the streets of Los Angeles through his foundation, A Better LA. His words are true in any situation: "If you want to win forever, always compete."

If the Seahawks don't make it back to the Super Bowl with Carroll at the helm, and win, the loss to the Patriots -- because of the pathetic call to throw a slant over the middle into the end zone -- will be forever associated with Carroll's name. That being said, WIN FOREVER is well written and a quick read. Pete Caroll is a Marin County guy who played defensive back and got his first coaching experience at the University of Pacific in Stockton. There he imbibed the existential psychology of Abraham Maslow and picked up the vocabulary of Michael Murphy and the Human Potential Movement popularized at Esalen Institute. No wonder the Seahawks under Carroll are such a cutting-edge dynamic team. The book mostly tracks Carroll's travails in his first unsuccessful go as an NFL head coach with first the Jets and next at New England post-Parcells and pre-Belichik before then moving on to his glory days at USC. Carroll's philosophy can be distilled in the motto "Win forever. Always compete." There is a lot of good stuff in WIN FOREVER. For instance, I didn't realize how important Carroll's stint as the 49ers defensive coordinator was to his development. Also, he has a lot of interesting stories about working for legendary Vikings head coach Bud Grant at Minnesota. We're lucky to have Pete Carroll here in the Emerald City.

You can always glean a few thoughts from a self help book, but honestly, don't waste your time with this one.

Okay book. I gave it 2.5 stars. I think I'd learn more from reading John Wooden's books. Watching the Seahawks will be a little different now that I've read this book.
