Directed and co-written by François Ozon in 2016 loosely based on the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch film "Broken Lullaby", this French drama depicts a young German woman whose fiancé has been killed in World War I and the remorse of the French soldier who attacked him on the spur of the moment.
Édouard Manet's painting "Le Suicidé" appears several times in the story as it eventually makes the protagonist want to live.
Superb are the performances of Paula Beer and Pierre Niney, both of whom lie for the sake of the good.
It turns out a profoundly thought-provoking and touching movie.
I feel heartwarming and heart-wrenching at the same time.

Beautiful cinematography and great acting. Loved the way the black and white was interchanged with color throughout the movie. I was hoping for a stronger ending to a wonderfully woven story.

Quite and interesting and unique storyline. Visually stunning in mostly black and white. Absolutely worth the time.

This is a German language film but was directed by French director Francois Ozon. Set in the period shortly after WW1, and shot in B/W but some occasional breaks into colour, this human drama is about love, grief, regret, and a desire for redemption. A very touching and engaging film indeed. Well worth my time.

KCLS patrons have spoken!! From your patron reviews I find that I am in total agreement with the majority of you. "Frantz" is an excellent film. It is especially appealing in Black and White, which fits the movie perfectly. The camera captures the feelings of the characters. The script is not predictable as so many are. The acting is warm and subdued. Everything seems so real and captures one imagination easily. The time watching this movie is magical!

Extremely moving film, both sad and sublime. It's a tribute to the humanity found in compassion and forgiving as a path then to hope and life. Paula Beer is fantastic in her role and the music binds their lives through its sorrow and beauty.
