Stunning cinematography is forefront in this beautiful and atmospheric film about love and the dangers of gossip and prejudice. The acting is superb, from all of the actors; in places it almost seems like the director has placed hidden cameras and recorded real-life conversations (though we hope that the unpleasant antagonists are not real!). The soundtrack needs to be mentioned: scored for solo strings rather than a string section, and it works with the photography to paint the feeling of place.

Yes, it is a beautiful film and the actors were terrific - all of them. I would have rated it higher if: 1) Greenwald had toned down the music. Endless cello and cello/violin. Too much is too much and gets in the way. And 2) if the movie had a little more energy and tension.

This stunning movie shows an accurate portrayal of the South in the year 1941 and has many lessons for people today who are interested in fighting and understanding prejudice and how the South reacted to it.

I expected to find this movie trite and redundant, as yet another look at southern racism and inter-racial relationships, but it surprised me. Well acted; the film slowly spun a web that drew my interest. A worthwhile movie, in my opinion.
