Early one morning Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Police confronts a grisly sight when the body of a young man is fished out of a fetid canal. All the clues point to a violent mugging, but for Brunetti the motive of robbery seems altogether too convenient. When something is discovered in the victim's apartment that suggests the existence of a high-level conspiracy, Brunetti becomes convinced that somebody, somewhere, is taking great pains to provide a ready-made solution to the crime. Rich with atmosphere and marvelous plotting, Death in a Strange Country is a superb novel in Donna Leon's chilling Venetian mystery series.

2nd book in Inspector Brunetti series. Have read 4, but not in order.

Emotion runs higher in this second installment than later releases: Brunetti's boss Patta is hilariously pompous, condescending, and incompetent, while the darkness that pervades life in Italy is palpably tragic. Readers might feel they're getting some closure (spoiler alert: a bad guy dies), but the last page will be devastating as it reveals how much that doesn't help.

The second book in the Guido Brunetti series

This 2nd in the series brings Commissario Brunetti his first encounter with Americans, other than the nuisance of tourists in his beloved Venice, when an unidentified body turns out to belong to a nearby US Army base. The mystery is convoluted, compounded by lack of cooperation on all sides, including his superior. Again Venice itself is a major character. I've enjoyed several later books in the series, and decided to go back to the beginning. Fun to see that Brunetti, his boss, and his family are fully formed characters from the get-go, though they all grow as the series progresses.

Ok if you really like Venice or have never been there and interested. Mystery was so-so.
