Add a CommentA convenient villain, a death in the family, a gentle mourning widow, weepy soliloquies to an urn full of ashes... With all its melodrama, BONNEVILLE boils down to nothing but a low-grade Lifetime movie, with one exception -- a top-notch cast. Jessica Lange, Joan Allen, and Kathy Bates are time-tested fine actresses that twist this hum-drum plot into something more palatable, infusing it with humour and charisma. It's no THELMA AND LOUISE, lacking the edge and daring of that classic, but it does have the knack for making you smirk at their antics, leaning hard on the themes of adventure and friendship. Beware, though. There are the obvious musical cues to smack you over the head. Wacky music? You should laugh. Slow piano keys and strings? Now you should cry. It's a little too contrived for my tastes, but if you like your movies spoon-fed to you, this may be just the thing to satiate you. For those like me, though, I wouldn't recommend BONNEVILLE.
This is is awful ! ...when I got this NYPL disc home and put this movie in the DVD player...it says: NOT FORMATTED FOR THIS REGION !!?? ( And it says "Region #1", on the DVD jacket !!?) I have watched a thousand other New York Public Library DVDs on my Panasonic Region 1 DVD Player,.. but this one makes it almost TWO DOZEN that have come up as NOT FORMATTED etc. !
I really wanted to see this one. And I had to wait for it.
WHY is the New York Public Library buying DVD's that are NOT FORMATTED to be viewed in this region ?
Has this happened to anyone else out there ??
An older women chick flick which was thoroughly enjoyable. My young adult daughter also thought it was pretty good. Nice story with a bit of humour.
