Wonderful story. Should be required in junior high classes.

"Based on a true story" - 1985's "Mask" gets the royal Hollywood treatment where way-way-way too much screen-time is given over to actress, Cher, playing the "biker bitch", Rusty Dennis.

IMO - The only times that this film comes to life and shows some real promise is when the scenes involve actor, Eric Stoltz playing teen, Rocky Dennis (the boy with a grotesque facial deformity that makes him a literal outcast in society).

Mask's soundtrack is dominated by songs from Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen.

Without question - It was actor, Eric Stoltz' sincere portrayal of the American teen, "Rocky" Dennis (a boy whose face was grotesquely disfigured by "lionitis") who single-handedly held this seriously floundering picture together.

Yep. Without Stoltz' solid and convincing performance (along with some truly excellent make-up effects) 1985's "Mask" was just a messy, little "biker gang" soap opera where Cher chewed up the scenery, threw idiotic tantrums, and, basically, played a total bitch at every possible opportunity.

And, speaking about the "Turks" biker gang - It really killed me how the whole lot of them were portrayed as being such good-hearted, little "softies" that they, literally, put the likes of the Boy and Girls Scouts of America to absolute shame.... Ha! Spare me!

Watched several times and always needed a box of tissue. A beautiful yet sad movie.

I've watched Mask multiple times since 1985, and it still makes me cry. The performances by Eric Stoltz, Cher, Sam Elliott and Laura Dern are all very good. Hennepin County Library's DVDs of this title are the director's cut version, which includes about 7 minutes of additional scenes and features songs by Bruce Springsteen that were not in the original release (songs by Bob Seger were included instead). Mask is rated PG-13.

I love great '80s movies, and this is one of the underrated gems! The story is timeless and emotionally affecting, regardless of other dated elements. The original "Wonder".

I agree with most of the other comments regarding this movie. I had not watched this movie for quit a few years then checked it out at the library. This is an oldie but a goody.

One of Cher's best roles. I really enjoyed it and got emotionally involved in the story. I highly recommend it.

A great movie based on a true story. It teaches the lesson that you can't judge a book by it's cover.
The chemistry between the major actors is just colossal.

It's crazy that this film did not win more awards, and the lack of nominations are unbelievable. I would consider this to be Cher's finest performance. The mother/son chemistry between Cher and Eric Stoltz is emotional and believable. Throw in the fine supporting cast, highlighted by Sam Elliott and Laura Dern, and this should have easily been an award winner. I've seen it several times, and it never gets old. Have a tissue on hand, and enjoy the Bob Seger soundtrack.
