A well-done, if conventional, crime film that is notable as one of the first movies of Billy Bob Thornton, who co-stars and wrote the script. He plays a coked up, unstable crook who, with his partners, kills some people and steals their money and coke. Two detectives pursue the fugitives and team up with a local lawman (Bill Paxton) to catch them. It came out during a period that was flooded with crime movies and it doesn't have the dark irony of the Coens, the gleeful violence and pop culture landscape of Taranatino, or the visceral lyricism of Scorsese. It's an above average, but unsurprising genre movie that lacks the intensity and mood of its superior peers. Paxton and Thornton would act together nearly a decade later in the far superior crime thriller, "A Simple Plan." Directed by Carl Franklin, who also did "Devil in a Blue Dress." Released in 1992.
