A horrific take on the true story of the Winchester haunted house and one woman's mission to wash away the blood curse of the Winchester rifle from claiming her own life and soul. This is a tale about guilt, ghosts, and guns...of how fortune brings misfortune, as a grim and determined woman oversees the construction of a house twenty four hours a day for twenty years with the simple motto of keep busy building or get busy dying. "Peter Tomasi and Ian Bertram make you want to sleep with the lights on after reading this tale of horror and dread that wraps you around the throat and doesn't let go. There's a price for everything, and we are reminded of that in the most entertaining, and disturbing, way." - Geoff Johns ( Justice League ) "House of Penance is Peter Tomasi's finest work to date, a haunting, macabre experience that will stay with any thoughtful reader long after its conclusion. A fine tale well told, and highly recommended." -Garth Ennis ( Preacher )

So much more than a horror comic about the Winchester Mystery House! Stunning artwork and colors too. Would love to see this turned into a movie (if done right, of course).

This looks like a horror graphic novel, but it's not, not really. It's a look at how grief and guilt can manifest in the physical world, how repentance works for a select few madmen anda woman, all of whom are haunted by violence.
This is a fictional account of Sarah Winchester's psychological torment and the reason she built the Winchester Mystery House as compared to her crewman, Warren Peck's, own regrets and shame. They both seek penance, via building The Winchester House, for the harm their guns have brought to the world; every bang of the hammer echoes the bang of a gun's hammer, the noise meant to keep evil spirits and tortuous thoughts at bay, thus, the house is under construction 24-hours a day.
The art is jangly, harsh, and not pleasing much like the story. Blood and guts, symbolically spilled from countless gunshot victims, ooze across each page adding the grotesque to illustrations already unsettling.
Still, this is not a horror story, it's a sad story, a terrible story that's worth reading.
