I went into this film not knowing what to expect for an interpretation of Newt Scamander. I was pleasantly charmed with his shyness around other people and the sheer expertise and quiet care he gives the animals. This is someone who has a passion similar to Steve Irwin or the Kratz Brothers but the gentle demeanor of a caretaker.
Kowalski was a close second favorite in this movie with his reactions to the American wizarding world. He acts as an audience surrogate in these moments with his awe and minor disbelief, and he eventually takes things in stride just as we should. The relationship between Queenie and him is so adorable, it's painful.
I came for the established franchise and stayed for the wonderful cast of characters. Quite magical!

Disclaimer: Card carrying, midnight book release goer, proud Ravenclaw here. I'm incredibly protective of my Harry Potter fandom. I literally grew up with the series. After the agony that was The Cursed Child, I was scared to get my hopes up for this one. I put off seeing it time and again, not because I was expecting to not enjoy it, but out of the anxiety of just not knowing what to expect. That being said, I freaking LOVED this movie. Eddie Redmayne was wonderfully cast, and gave such personality and, dare I say, magic to a character that had next to nothing to go off of. FBAWTFT gave us a glimpse of the Wizarding World we didn't get from the Harry Potter series and it was equally fascinating to see what the American magical scene is like. I was worried that the lack of a British locale would feel artificial and strange, but between the backdrop of the 1920's and the whimsical atmosphere, it was everything I could've asked for and more.

There is no such place as Equatorial Guinea in 1926; there is only the Spanish colony of Río Muni. And there is no way a Negress would be the president of anything in the racist USA of 1926.

I enjoyed the movie. It is not a prequel to Harry Potter - as one reviewer noted, there was only one reference ...to Dumbledore - so story could stand-alone. Nice '20s costumes, enjoyed the ending. It is what it is, a light-hearted cross between the Potter fabulous creatures and the newer Ghostbusters. 'Nice'.

There's a lot to recommend. This should satisfy both Harry Potter fans and fantasy enthusiasts as well. Director David Yates is back. He directed the last four installments of the Harry Potter series and he will direct all 5 of these films as well. On the other hand, Steve Kloves, who adapted every Potter movie except Order of the Phoenix, is only a producer here. This time the script is penned by none other than author Dame J. K. Rowling herself. This is her first screenplay. She pretty much had free reign to adapt her work any way she saw fit. We get a wandering two-hour plus movie from a meager story thread. Fantastic Beasts is a suitably accomplished escapist adventure. However the attempts to mix upbeat fantasy with something more sinister, fall flat.

I am a little surprised by all of the mixed reviews. All I can guess is that they are maybe die-hard harry potter fans that we hoping for more linkages to the original story? (Spoiler alert - there really isn't any just one very minor reference to Dumbledore). I thought the movie was pretty good with some terrific special effects.
My one grip is that they were a little less careful in terms of the rules of this magical world that Rowling has made - for example the wizards only seemed to need their wands about half the time they wanted to do magic. The rest of the time they could just wave their hands and make it happen.

The movie was rather boring for adults but the creatures were fantastic !

Harry Potter meets Doctor Who and not in a good way. A little fun, but also a little creepy and confusing. Did love the suitcase! Bottom line, with all the mixed reviews, you simply have to see it yourself and decide which side you are on. Had I paid to see it I would have felt ripped off.
