Opinion

From Library Staff

Each installment in the Zelda series remixes or builds on the games that came before. Although most games in the series are stand-alones they can all still be linked together in a timeline, and if anyone wants to come discuss it with me I'm always up for a talk on Zelda lore.

Breath of the Wild let me fight Ganon with a mop, and for that I will always be thankful. An absolute game changer in regards to open world game mechanics.

Boring. Boring. Boring.

Nintendo used to be the company that everyone copied their gameplay styles from; now Nintendo is the one copying everyone else... Skyrim Creed anyone?

And why did Link suddenly get lost in Halo? What's up with the technology sci-fi stuff? Zelda games were far better off when Link didn't have an iPad strapped to his belt.

Collect-a-thon + millions of crappy weapons that all suck and break after only a couple of swings? Yawn. Durability on items is never fun. Just means wasting time in a menu instead of playing the game.

Finally arrived! Now to see what the hype is about.

I am still surprised that Wii U games do not feature full voice-overs for all the characters.

Game play is open world with many breakable, stackable and ignitable objects and terrain as with other Zelda titles.

The game play terrain seems to be an amalgamation of Skyrim or Rune's world exploration with the haunting desolation of Shadow of the Colossus and ICO at times. Though some elements can feel similar to Dark Souls series there violence is replaced by a puff of purple smoke, a pop and the dropped teeth and bone of bokogoblins.

The violence again animals is pretty cruel like tossing live lizards (etc.) into a cooking pot and seeing them dance around the heat until succumbing to it. Definitely, not a vegan game. Most larger animals turn into steak or a drumstick after being killed with a bow, sword or club.

Relaxing game so far. Watch out for heights and bogs they will kill you faster than any enemy.

Save for all ages. Controls take getting used to at first for those used to a PS3/4 or Xbox game pad.

It feels a little early to say Breath of the Wild is my favorite game ever, but man, is it a contender. The game’s not perfect. I can’t stress how much I miss classic Zelda dungeons and tools (no hookshot?!) and the weapon durability system can be tedious—do Hyrule’s blacksmiths only work in chalk?—but for me those complaints pale in comparison to the game’s living, breathing, astounding, explorable, and incredibly fun open world.

One of the best Zelda games ever, yet, doesn't feel like Zelda. The creators added little easter eggs to previous Zelda games which keeps the Zelda theme in the game, along with the overall storyline. On the whole, one of the best Zelda games ever.

There's no point borrowing this unless you have a WiiU Pro controller, which cost $80. Ridiculous on the part of Nintendo. You could just play on the Wii gamepad but I couldn't get any sound.

Pros:
+ A very expansive, living world to lose yourself into. NPCs will surprise you with their behavior.
+ Fun, challenging gameplay. The first Zelda that requires a little bit of skill in order to progress.
+ As little tutorials as possible. The game allows people to experiment and doesn’t hold their hands throughout the entire game.
+ Good soundtrack. Many don’t seem to like the prominence of the piano on the new score but I like it. It can be subtle or bombastic when it needs to be.
+ Memorable characters. Without spoiling anything, the premise of the game is my favorite since Majora’s Mask and it has some of the best characters in the franchise.
+ Beautiful graphics. It is incredible what Nintendo managed to get out of the Wii U. You’ll be taking photos of the scenery very often.
Cons:
- Framerate is all over the place. At times you would get parts of the game that will slow down all the way to 1-2 FPS. It has improved after patches though.
- English dub is bad. Some character voices did not match at all how you’d picture their voices to sound like.
Hands down, one of the most incredible games I’ve ever played. The cons are very little and are borderline nitpicks. I took my time and beat the game after 80 hours and I can see myself playing 80 hours more and still be discovering new things. Believe the hype, this is the new gold standard for open-world game design moving forward. Cannot recommend it enough.
