I thought the interaction of all the people was well done. It was a different way of looking at such an incident but you also needed the background info to get a bit more understanding as to why things were to some point that way. They always say it is someone you know and the words at the end of one character was a surprise (someone who moved away). I think that such things are quiet possible but most think of movies and regular plots, this one was just different but good.

I'd heard the raves. I'd read about the awards. I planned a dinner-and-a-movie party around Elle. I was looking forward to it. The food was amaze-balls, the company terrific, and the movie left us perplexed. We hypothesized theories but in the end, we didn't care and were left lackluster.

I'm glad so many viewers found it worthy of five stars. I, on the other hand, want that time back! With so many movies I can't keep up with, this one did nothing for me and I didn't see its point.

" You’ve never seen a rape-revenge fantasy quite like “Elle,” not least because the rape, revenge and fantasy components of that subgenre have never been quite so fascinatingly disarranged. Knowingly incendiary but remarkably cool-headed, and built around yet another of Isabelle Huppert’s staggering psychological dissections, Paul Verhoeven’s long-awaited return to notional genre filmmaking pulls off a breathtaking bait-and-switch: Audiences arriving for a lurid slab of arthouse exploitation will be taken off-guard by the complex, compassionate, often corrosively funny examination of unconventional desires that awaits them. "- Guy Lodge.

This is a good, late career film by Paul Verhoeven and a knockout , hilarious performance by Isabelle Huppert- which is odd considering the disturbing material in the film.
It's a testament to Verhoeven's stellar abilities as a filmmaker that so many people are seriously upset by this film- it just proves he's done a great job.

A troubling and hilarious film by Paul Verhoeven- obviously this is not a film for everyone.

Like many others, I did not like this film, despite wanting to, as Isabelle Huppert is such a fine actress. I had to fast forward through some revolting scenes and thus got confused as to what happened. I did find this website helpful as an explanation of the film: http://www.thisisbarry.com/single-post/2017/07/18/Elle-2016-Movie-Plot-Ending-Explained

Huppert is superb as usual. Complex character and intriguing plot.

Paul Verhoeven's French film "Elle" opens with a break in and a rape. Needless to say, this film is not for everyone. While lead actor Isabelle Huppert may signal classy art movie, the Dutch-born Verhoeven, lest you forget, directed "Robocop" and "Basic Instinct." And "Basic Instinct" may be the most relevant antecedent here, as this too is a twisted erotic thriller, albeit a much more ironic and nuanced one. It more glances at trashy genre films than embraces them and there's some family drama that the younger Verhoeven would've left out of his more over the top films. Going into this cold is probably the best way. Huppert is great and the film is dark and a little sick in the best possible way.

Huppert's acting was interesting to watch, but really, what was the point in making this film?
