Best novel I have read in 2017 to date - and time is running out!
Many layers of interest, from the recovering veteran to the new copper to the inevitable bureaucracy and of course the love affair.
And rumbling through the entire book is the dreadful murderer.

Another book confirming that fighting in WWI was pretty awful. A little long, but very readable and enjoyable. It's setting is similar to that of the Inspector Rutledge stories of Charles Todd (England shortly after WWI), but without the annoying presence of Rutledge's dead former comrade in arms. Madden is less haunted by the war, but still carries scars from it.

Wow! I couldn't put this book down. An excellent detective story, yes, but so much more - wonderful writing, vivid characters, both good and evil, who were damaged by the war. My grandfather died at the Somme, which made it resonate particularly for me.

I loved the setting just after WWI, which is an integral part of the story. I thought the occasional shifting perspectives heightened the drama. There is also a love story embedded in the tale, one that never descends into syrupy melodrama. John Madden is a broken soul, like so many who survived the horror of the trenches. His relentless search for a strange killer is also a journey of his own healing.

While the horrors of the Great War are still alive in the minds of the men that returned, John Madden is trying to find his place again in the world. Soon he finds himself face to face with true evil - a serial killer that has no conscience and is ready to strike again at any moment.
