How do you communicate with aliens to find out what they want and avoid a devastating war?

It was a good film. It was a quieter, more thoughtful film than I was expecting. It had a good premise and I thought Amy Adams was very good in it. If you're looking for a science fiction film full of action and explosions, then this is not what you're looking for, but if you're looking for a ... Read More »

Like the new look for the aliens, kinda like "Thing" from the Addams Family. Kept waiting for something to happen but it's two hours of humans trying to talk to aliens and that's pretty much it. Boring, Boring, Boring!

2016 Thought provoking sci-fi movie of First Contact

I was dubious that a worthwhile film could be made out of Ted Chiang's rather cerebral short story, "The Story of Your Life," but this is one of the rare films which does justice to its written inspiration. That being said, though, I do wonder how well a viewer not familiar with the story could follow the plot. Part political suspense and part decryption puzzle, Arrival follows a team of people struggling to learn the language of aliens who have just arrived (hence the title) on Earth. In the end, though, the viewer discovers that the tale has been about fate and family all along.

I wanted so much to enjoy this movie. Gave up after 30 minutes. There are so many dark scenes which have dark scenes within them with more dark scenes. Wasn't going to sit through 2 hours with nothing to see.

Another "ETs give a lesson in humanity" story similar to 'Interstellar' or 'Contact.' I hoped to like this film more, but couldn't excuse its flaws. The plot is so disjointed and diffuse, it would've been more fitting for the aliens' final message to be a big question mark.... ???

Watch it to the end, and see hope happen! Well done.

Yet another worthless "aliens-arrive-on-earth" movie that is so bad that it put me to sleep.

Movie was intriguing the first two thirds of the movie, but fell apart after that. Unsatisfying weak ending. I do like the acting of Amy Adams, however, no matter what movie she is in.

This movie is too good for a simple review. It's taken from Cheng's "Story of Your Life," which is such an awesome sci-fi concept. Although for some the idea may not be new, the way it's being used is rather innovative and novel. The characters are fantastic as well, and I like how they focused on language.

For what to expect:
Many people looking for an action film or aliens vs humans will not find this movie to be worth their time. This is one of the first films in the 21st century that has little to no violence whatsoever. With that being said, many people will not like it for that reason. It's almost like a better version of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
