Santa's Seasonal Jeer

O, what a touching yuletide display: snow, falling gently from an night sky, changing the cityscape into a winter wonderland, wrapping a seedy alleyway in a frosty white coating....just as "Santa" barfs disgustingly moist chunks in front of a brick wall.

Not since Jack Nicholson's Badass Badusky brayed his litany of four-letter invective in THE LAST DETAIL (1974) and Paul Newman's Reggie Dunlop disgorged his puerile vocabulary in SLAP SHOT (1977) has there been such an obscenity-spewing soul as Billy Bob Thornton's Willie in BAD SANTA.

For Willie, the scatological isn't merely his preferred mode of verbal expression, it's his lifestyle. Profanities pour from his lips into the traumatized ears of children who only want to talk to jolly St. Nick; Willie debauches most women within his grasp ("F*** me, Santa! F*** me, Santa!"); copious amounts of beer and liquor pickle his innards; plus he's a safe-cracking criminal. Add his partner in crime, Marcus (the ferociously funny Tony Cox) and you get a veritable orgy of x-rated language. Place this pair in colliding juxtaposition with the staid normalcy of Christmas bonhomie and you get outrageous comedy.

Usually, the casual profanity found in many of today's movies is a crude, desperate and lazy attempt at "realism". To be truly effective and necessary such talk must be based in convincing characters and situations. We get that aplenty in BAD SANTA.

Except for the misplaced violence near the end the movie is howlingly on target. The cast evokes real laughs, especially the dear, departed Bernie Mac as a rogue store detective, and the late, lamented John Ritter, standing in for Red State American morality.

Warning: have the kids safely out of the house or stashed in the panic room while viewing BAD SANTA (o, he's really a bad Santa!). A Merry Christmas (and a Happy Kwaanza!) to everyone!

I actually enjoyed this movie it had an all star cast. My favourite two scenes were Scene 5: Prove It! and Scene 10: I think this gonna sting a little. One of the hilarious comedy movies I have ever seen. This was either the second or third time that John Ritter & Billy Bob Thornton had teamed up together. This was also probably the second time Bernie Mac & Tony Cox teamed together and this was also Lauren Graham and Alex Bornstein second time teaming up together. Lauren Tom was also in the movie. Man if I was an actor and Lauren Graham or Lauren Tom were my love interests I would do it because they are two of the best actresses in Hollywood and plus people in Hollywood get paid to do love scenes. Also Lauren Graham and Lauren Tom are two of my favourite actresses in Hollywood. They are Icons. Hats off to both Lauren Graham and Lauren Tom.

Billy Bob is one of my absolute favorite actors. I can't imagine why in the world he consented to do this trashy movie. Granted, I only watched :30 of it but seeing this creepy Santa guy with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and throwing up from being drunk was just too much. It must have had a moral at the end but I just couldn't get there.

The plot is original, the characters are well put together, and the humor is constant and fabulous. Yes it is vulgar and not for children, but it was never marketed as the opposite. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

An R-rated version of "A Christmas Story" -- loaded with delightfully naughty, warm and funny scenes. This was John Ritter's last major role in a film.

I hope Billy Bob isn't like this in real life, but he nails this guy. This movie isn't for everyone, but it's very funny.
