This is a 2008 American Western based on the 2005 novel "Appaloosa" by crime writer Robert B. Parker.
Unlike a traditional genre western, this drama sets itself apart with smart psychology, an intriguing love triangle and good chemistry between the leads.
Although the main actors act superbly, the open-ended curtain-drop seems unsatifying.

Not the finest western, a lot of unanswered questions, espe3cially about the female lead. It was ok.

Appaloosa starts of brilliantly with all the ingredients to be great western, Tense standoff, Evil villain and gritty atmosphere.
Then goes down hill. The first 15 minutes is one of the best westerns ever filmed. too bad they had to film the rest.

The cliched essence of the American Western that shines from terrific acting and flashes of Robert B. Parker's brilliant writing. Definitely offbeat and great fun!

I sense a recurring theme here. I too, am a fan of Westerns. This was a valiant effort from Ed Harris, (directing, co-writing the screenplay, etc.), but it just didn't pack a punch. And I found chipmunk-cheeked Renée Puckerface and her perma-grin totally irritating.

Appaloosa ---- by Robert B. Parker (DVD) 2009 ---- Performers: -- Jeremy Irons, Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen, Renée Zellweger, Timothy Spall, Lance Henriksen. ---- Rating: R ---- Based on the novel by Robert B. Parker ----
Originally released as a motion picture in 2008. ---- ---- My Review:This is a good movie, alot on the "GRUFF" side. I felt the Tuffness was over played, like most of the new action movies are these days. Not for kids! -> ---- Enjoy! ---- (finished 8-22-2012) RichardPaul

Good efforts, but at the end, it's an okay Western.

A mediocre Western. Lots of depth in the characters that is never played up. Falls flat.

It was an "okay" movie. Interesting in parts, with some odd humour thrown in. Terrible role casting for Renee and Viggo... But great ending.

Virgil Cole: "...You do any kind of work?" Allison French: "I play the organ... and the piano." Virgil Cole: "You're not a whore. (awkward pause) ...What?" Allison French: "Don't be crude!" Virgil Cole: "Yeah, well no sense fluffin' your feathers about it -- we don't see a lotta single women 'round here that ain't whores!" Allison French: "Well I'm one!"
